How to Detect and Reduce Interview Bias

We all have biases. There is no way to eliminate bias, but with the right processes and structures in place, we can reduce its impact as much as possible.

Over 180 cognitive biases impact how we make decisions. In this training, we will explore four of the most common biases when interviewing someone and what you can do to reduce their impact.

- 4 common types of interview bias (i.e., First impression bias, Similar-to-me bias, Halo and horn bias, Confirmation bias).
- How to combat these common interview biases to make more inclusive hiring decisions.

How to Conduct a Structured Interview

The cost of a bad hire adds up and can be as much as 3.5 times the annual salary for the position that you are trying to hire for. One of the most common tools used in the hiring process is the interview. Unfortunately, many interview processes are full of interview biases that can lead to bad hires, an unfair hiring process, and a lack of diversity in your organization. The best type of interview is a structured interview, where candidates are asked the same questions in the same order that are scored using a standard rating scale. The training will look at ways you can improve the fairness, validity, and defensibility of your interviews.
