Bio

I’m an advocate for women in the tech industry. I coach women to be stronger leaders and men who want to be better allies for women. I speak about gender diversity, leadership, and women in tech. And, to bring more diversity to speaker lineups at tech industry events, I teach public speaking workshops and co-authored "Present! A Techie’s Guide to Public Speaking."

Formerly, I spent over 25 years building software products. I started off writing code and over time moved into executive leadership. Most recently, I was a vice president at Adobe Systems, where I led corporate-wide product globalization, software security, and other cross company engineering functions.

Outside of my commercial ventures I work with a number of non-profits. I'm on the Brown University Computing and Information Technology Advisory Council. I'm also on the advisory boards for The Women's CLUB of Silicon Valley, WEST (Women Entering & Staying in Technology), Women Serve on Boards, and Brown University's Computer Science Department Diversity Committee. And through the Brown University Women's Launch Pad, I mentor young women about to start their careers.

I'm also a bit of a public speaking geek. I'm a TEDx speaker, and I frequently give keynotes at conferences. With Poonima Vijayashankar, I wrote "Present! A Techie's Guide to Public Speaking," published November 2015.

In addition, I've written articles for The Daily Beast, Inc., Fast Company, Women 2.0, and other leadership sites.

In 2015, the California State Assembly honored me with the Wonder Women Tech Innovator Award for outstanding achievements in business and technology and for being a role model for women.

Stepping Outside Our Comfort Zone: It’s Where the Magic Happens

Stepping outside of our comfort zone is often where the magic happens. We stretch ourselves, we learn, we innovate, and we accomplish things we didn't think we could. Yet, it can be challenging to take those steps, especially for women in a male-dominated STEM field.

In this keynote, Karen shares her career journey and the lessons she learned along the way about stepping outside of her comfort zone. She also talka about how she forced herself to conquer her fear of public speaking, stepping away from the comfort zone of the audience to embracing being on stage.

Because public speaking provides the visibility and professional credibility that can lead to career growth, Karen wants to see more women speaking at conferences, community meet-ups, and company meetings. She co-authored "Present! A Techie's Guide to Public Speaking," to inspire and help people improve their presentations skills. During this keynote, Karen also shares her favorite tips from the book.

Present! A Techie's Guide to Public Speaking

To grow your career, you know what you need to do: improve your public speaking skills.

Public speaking provides the visibility and professional credibility that helps you score the next big opportunity. But even more important is the fact that it transforms the way you communicate. Improved confidence and the ability to convey messages clearly will impact your relationships with your managers, coworkers, customers, industry peers, and even potential new hires.

In this one-hour presentation, Karen Catlin covers the importance of speaking at conferences and events, along with strategies to get started. She shares some favorite tips from her book "Present! A Techie's Guide to Public Speaking," along with ideas for finding speaking opportunities. She also some embarrassing stories that are just too good to keep to herself.

Women in Tech: The Missing Force

In 2014, I spoke at TEDx College Of William And Mary. The theme of the event was “Forward,” to address the subtly powerful forces that are changing our daily lives and affecting our future through our communication, our careers, and our relationships. My topic? Women in the software industry, and how they are missing from the force shaping the future of technology.

In this talk, I explain how there used to be more women in tech (yes, more!), why the industry has become more male dominated, and what we can all do about it. And I weave in personal experiences throughout.

The Male Allies Project: Everyday Actions for Men in Tech

There are many of you. Men who are allies for women. Men who are championing diversity.

But here’s the rub. Diversity may not be top of mind as we move through our day at the break-neck pace so often found in tech. We may say or do the wrong thing, not realizing until we see the reaction of women or underrepresented minorities around us. Or worse, see these employees leave for better opportunities.

In this lightning talk, I describe the Male Allies Project and how we leverage Twitter to deliver everyday actions to help men become stronger allies at their companies.
