Bio

Dr. Akilah Cadet, MPH has 15+ years in management and building successful projects, teams, and leaders. She has worked various multimillion-dollar projects ranging from health to education. Dr. Cadet is the founder of Change Cadet, an Oakland based organizational development consulting firm specializing in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Change Cadet aims to support women, people of color, and underserved communities, through coaching, strategy, innovation, and organizational change. Cadet is a French term that means soldier and Change Cadet prepares soldiers of change to overcome barriers in the workforce so there can be more opportunity for women and people of color. As a woman of color, she uses her personal and professional experiences as well as a touch of Beyoncé to inspire her work. Dr. Cadet holds a Bachelor of Science in Health Education in Community Based Public Health, a Master of Public Health, and a Doctorate of Health Sciences in Leadership and Organizational Behavior.

Hiring Women of Color is Not a Diversity and Inclusion Strategy

Women of color have experience, a strong voice, ideas, and leadership expertise, yet they keep getting overlooked and passed over. The number of Fortune 500 female CEOs dropped by 25% last year and only 2% of black women are in middle management roles. This reality prevents an entire group of people from achieving their full potential, and in turn, negatively affects business outcomes. So what can people professionals do to bridge the gap?

Persons/Women of Color in the Workplace:

Dr. Cadet shares her story on being a leader as a woman and a person of color in the workplace. Being a woman or person of color (WOC or POC) in tech/workforce can be rewarding and challenging. Being one of the few or the only one means that there are times when WOC/POC feel alone, not fully supported, or overlooked. Dr. Cadet will share tips on how WOC/POC can slay the workplace by using barriers as strengths, managing up, building an advisory squad, and self-care. As a WOC/POC, Dr. Cadet shares her expertise as a Doctor in leadership and organizational behavior and her personal workplace stories with a touch of Beyoncé.

Self-Care in the Workplace:

Dr. Cadet uses her personal story and insight share how to have self-care in the workplace. As someone who experienced severe depression due to a former job, she had to learn how to take care of herself at work along with finding ways to be happy at work and home. Dr. Cadet provides tips and tools on when to go, when to stay, and when to fight for what you want in order to maintain mental and professional balance and harmony. She helps participants align with their purpose, passion, and values to assure any position, a 9-5 or running their own business is the foundation for happiness and well-being.

Women Empowerment/Women of Color:

Women Empowerment/Women of Color: Dr. Cadet uses her personal story and insight to share how to be a successful woman or woman of color (WOC) in the workplace. She discusses the importance of knowing your perceived barriers, building your advisory squad, the power of Beyoncé, and when to move on if not valued.
