About Judy Ryan

Judy Ryan is founder and CEO of LifeWork Systems, an award-winning performance management company specializing in culture transformation frameworks since 2002. Her organization received the Vanguard Award for Innovation from the St. Louis Mental Health Board for her unconventional model and the measurable results she achieved when applying it to large scale projects. She is a recognized thought leader in applied behavioral science systems that impact deep culture change for exceptional outcomes. Her culture models are consistent with today's rapid speed of change, diversity and complexity and trends towards agile principles and practices in business and technology.

Judy is the author of “What’s the Deal with Workplace Culture Change?” (Published by People Tested Media in 2015), a columnist on 'Emotional Intelligence' in The Women’s Journals nationally since 2005, a columnist on 'The Extraordinary Workplace' in St. Louis Small Business Monthly since 2012 and a columnist for 'Hispanic Leadership' for Autentico since 2019. She has approximately 200 published articles to date. She is also a systems developer and integrator, consultant, trainer, coach, and keynote presenter, with guest appearances on podcasts, radio and television.

Judy is responsible for creating a fully scalable, digital platform and support processes within her framework, for distributing Teal organizational development skills to all people and sustaining them within an organization, for greater emotional intelligence, as it is highly needed in this period of globalization and digital transformation, when many people are seeking to successfully navigate 21st century techno-human ecosystems. She understands that to keep current with the agility of business, people must be equally agile in every way, including within heuristic, cross-functioning teamwork. Judy Ryan’s purpose is to create a world in which all people love their lives.

When Beethoven saw a piano, he saw a symphony. When Judy Ryan meets people, she sees the unseen beauty and truth beneath the surface and uncovers it. And that truth – the one that’s really happening under the surface – is what we all need to see. The old ways of understanding human systems are not working anymore – the way of superior versus inferior or management versus employee or parent versus child. They never did (not without lasting, serious, negative side effects). And our world is suffering because of this; we need a powerful, positive and sustainable transformation.

Your 21st Century Workplace: Creating a Culture of Resilience & Agility

People are the greatest asset of any organization. Knowing how to offer them a compelling and uniquely supportive culture is key to attracting and keeping the best, building upon their strengths and expanding their human potential.

Participants learn a proven process to creating a healthy workplace culture, including what and why emotional and social intelligence and healthy culture are needed for success. This session covers:

• How do I assess my workplace culture?
• What positive outcomes would warrant changing my culture?
• If I did want to transform it, what would I transform it from, into?
• What do leaders need to learn and commit to do (then distribute to the entire team)?
• Is there a process for transforming my culture?

This presentation is focused towards executives who understand the need for and seek to create a healthy workplace culture because they know it is required in order to empower people to be exceptional.

Bridging Globalization, Diversity, Technology & Emotional Intelligence

Change is happening at the speed of imagination, often causing high levels of confusion and strain on individuals and organizations. Outdated, autocratic approaches no longer work and new systems are needed that promote high levels of emotional and social intelligence and personal responsibility. The glue that holds us together in the future must be based on trustworthy teamwork and collaboration, through mentoring and mutual respect that expand human potential, and through a human system framework proven to bring about stability for our rapidly changing times.

Sexual Harassment and Abuse: Unwrapping Core Systems Behind Harassment, Bullying & Objectification

We all suffer at the mercy of those who are not self-aware or self-managing and therefore bully or otherwise neglect or violate the needs of others. Those around us may be suffering due to our lack of the same.

This program helps participants learn to cultivate social and emotional intelligence in themselves, within their homes, and workplaces. Participants learn to understand what and why to assess and cultivate social and emotional intelligence in themselves and within their teams.

There is a lot of buzz about both emotional and social intelligence and we all suffer effects when there is a lack of either, but many people do not know what they are nor how to develop both for greater joy and accomplishment.

This topic is focused towards any individual who seeks to create healthy relationships and greater success in life and work by addressing the social and emotional aspects of living in order to be exceptional.

Creating a Diverse AND Inclusive Organization

The old ways of understanding human systems are not working anymore – the ways of superior versus inferior or management versus employees or adults versus children. They never really did without serious, negative side-effects. The illusion what we should go back to ‘The good old days’ is just that; an illusion. Back then, win/lose (actually lose/lose) still ran rampant and the need for mutual respect and caring was sorely lacking. This could not be more obvious today than in the volume of polarization we see between generations, religions, political parties, genders, races and more. Too often there is hate, gossip, withdrawal, withholding and harshness of every kind.

Every person needs to develop social interest (the awareness of the consequences one causes others) and strong, caring relationships. This presentation addresses the conditions needed to bring out belonging and significance needed to dissolve barriers and unlock the best in all people, no matter how diverse.

Fostering Innovation, Collaboration, High Performance and Teamwork With New and Proven Human Systems

Strong, positive relationships are key to success but many people do not know how to create or sustain them. They tend to be comfortable in the role of leader or follower, but not both.

In this presentation, participants learn about eight values that build trust, what helps to forge strong bonds and loyalties between people, the true meaning of trans-functional teamwork and how to use practices in your daily life in order to enjoy positive relationships on a consistent basis.

It's Not Just Your Papa's Workplace Anymore

The time has come to balance the values of the masculine and feminine within each person and within teams of people no matter the setting. The masculine qualities and strengths of focus, courage, results-orientation and drive, without the feminine ones can become brutal and dehumanizing. The feminine traits of receptivity, nurturing, relationship building and empathy without the masculine traits, can be passive and ineffective.

In order to bring about a new workplace honoring both, all systems must reflect a commitment to psychological safety and opportunity to lead and follow for all members. There must also be room for consistent monthly mentoring support so that one is able to take the resolve to create what is good and blend it with the finesse of doing so with mutual respect, empathy and trustworthy collaboration.

This presentation covers systems and practices needed to meet today's challenges and to achieve today's goals, in a balanced and effective workplace community.

A Compelling Framework To Attract, Onboard, Develop and Retain Top Talent

This presentation describes a systems integration model for how every person in an organization (from CEO to front line staff) is enabled to own a responsibility and values-based culture model, including initial adoption, integration into the operations of a business, and how an entire staff sustains it. A culture of personal responsibility and aligned values is the only appropriate option for visionary leaders and their workforce, in order to progress profitably and collaboratively within the requirements of our current and future trends.

Today’s global marketplace requires that people become supported and equipped to overcome today’s challenges and leverage existing opportunities. Participants consider conditions and conversations that lead to appreciation of differences and create highly productive and proactive behaviors that result in resiliency and collaborative teamwork.

This presentation shows positive impacts of a framework designed to empower an entire work community.

Establishing a Mentoring Culture for High Performance

One of the most important factors in high performance for every person is connection to a caring mentor who checks in, asks the right questions, offers encouragement and provides consistent, frequent support. Each is provided a leadership development process for empowerment.

In this presentation, participants learn why and how to create and use a mentoring planning process, and engage in a mentoring relationship that allow for the development of emotional and social intelligence competencies and task ownership so each can manage one's relationships, productivity, engagement and blueprint plan of action.

Leadership development is a priority for all people in all roles, and mentoring is the method adopted to continue to achieve and develop it ongoing. The objective of this presentation is to help people adopt new tools and strategies, including a blueprint tool and a mentoring process to help people move from power over to development of empowerment from within.

Optimize Human Capital Developing Internal Motivation

People are always motivated! They’re just not always motivated to do what you want! There’s a difference between being a boss and a leader. Effective leaders empower people, thereby creating other leaders. In this presentation, participants learn what systems from the past to dismantle, and what systems need to replace them for the development of responsibility and intrinsic motivation in all. This becomes the basis for all people becoming authentically powerful, influential and self-directed.

Millennial Employees - Canaries in the Coal Mine

Here are just a few of the common complaints leveled against millennial employees:

They lack persistence, are self-absorbed, act entitled, are arrogant, idealistic, and lazy, rude, job hoppers.

They can act quite so. But…millennial employees are deeply conscious of inequality and don’t readily buy in to, or cooperate with, the idea that they have less to offer. They also resist control methods, such as autocracy, dangling carrots, assumed hierarchy, and shaming/judging leveled at them in the forms of praise and disapproval.

This presentation explores the hidden psychological contracts between various generations and offers a specific approach to dissolving barriers within millennial employee relationships. The systems provided in this topic all for a mining of talent and motivation not found without this understanding and implementation of new behaviors that lead to authentic community and collaboration with these up-and-coming leaders.

Redirecting Negative Behavior Including Under-Performance

Challenged by poor behavior in others? Tired of harshness AND permissiveness in reaction to it? What do you do, think and say when people annoy you, anger you, hurt you, worry you or insult you?

Participants learn about redirect, an alternative to harshness, punishment, permissiveness, or bribing to effect positive change when faced with under-performance and counter-productive behavior.

This presentation is for anyone challenged with poor behavior, who wants an effective resolution that preserves the dignity of all involved and improves relationships and a sense of community for all.

Communicating to Build Trust, Collaboration and Teamwork

Most people do not realize when they are thinking or speaking in ways that demoralize themselves or others. This presentation is designed to provide awareness and strategies for noticing and transforming communications to create more positive and encouraging relationships and effects.

Participants learn the difference between listening and hearing, and how to use language to impact positive change. Each draws upon new skills, including how to make accountable requests and agreements, encourage on another, transform frustrations, and eliminate gossip.

Ensuring Generational Agility: Bridging Gaps so all work Collaboratively to Expand Human Potential

The old ways of understanding human systems are not working anymore – the ways of superior versus inferior or management versus employees.

This could not be more obvious than the phenomenon of Millennial employees. They are often judged to be idealistic, disengaged, rogue, entitled, uninhibited, job-hoppers, and overly sensitive to justice and democracy.

They communicate and learn through technology and they challenge any place where command and control are fallbacks, insisting leaders see that development of values, shared power, progressive methods, and cross-functional teamwork are non-negotiable. They are a barometer for the health of your culture overall. They need leaders who will help them to develop social interest and strong relationships because use of technology and globalization often leaves them feeling less effective and supported in contributing solutions. This presentation will address conditions that bring out the best in all employees of every generation.

Nurturing Emotional Intelligence

Most people do not understand what emotional intelligence constitutes and even when they do, they don’t always know how to engage in it. Then their behavior and thinking remains without structure nor systems to support emotional intelligence competencies.
In this presentation, each person leaves understanding what creates fear in us, the role of choices and adaptability, how to take full responsibility for all aspects of our being, including the healthy integration of our thinking, feeling and relating capacities.

We all know what it is to suffer at the mercy of those who are not self-aware or self-managing and therefore bully or otherwise neglect or violate the priority needs and values of others. We also know what it is like to be in the presence of those people who are highly aware of themselves and others so they know how to interact in the world in positive ways.

In this presentation, participants learn why and how to cultivate emotional intelligence for increased joy.

When You Can't Help or Fix a Relationship

This topic is focused on providing participants information on lesser known terms that can profoundly impact the quality, the psychological and physical safety of, and the management of, relationships.

Terms reviewed in this presentation include empath, multiple types of narcissism, intermittent reinforcement, parental alienation and more. Knowledge is power and recognizing the importance of consistent, positive reinforcement in relationships versus abusive conditions and why they qualify as such is key to your happiness and wellbeing. Understanding healthy interpersonal dynamics and recognizing red flags ensures you create the conditions in which you can love your life and live into your greatest human potential.

I Don't Like to Gossip, But...

In a compassionate and straightforward manner, this presentation unwraps the understandable reasons people gossip, and common beliefs that must be examined and laid aside in order to transform gossip into meaningful exchanges that build rather than break down relationships.

Gossip is a highly toxic behavior for the givers and receivers involved and so common it’s epidemic. Most people tolerate gossip as a fact of life and don’t consider the core reasons we gossip, what to do instead, and commit to stop engaging in it. Throughout this presentation, participants consider the reasons, results, and their role and responsibilities in addressing this destructive behavior. Specific tools and strategies are introduced, including steps, intentions and implementation processes for drastic reduction or elimination of gossip.

Motivating People From The Inside Out

People are always motivated! They’re just not always motivated to do what you want! There’s a difference between being a boss and a leader. Effective leaders empower people, thereby creating other leaders. In this presentation, participants learn what systems from the past to dismantle, and what systems need to be replaced for the development of responsibility and intrinsic motivation in all. This becomes the basis for all people becoming authentically powerful, influential and self-directed.

Well-intentioned authority figures have used extrinsic motivation methods such as control, rewards, judging (shaming) and pampering in an attempt to develop good citizens. Without realizing it, the very extrinsic motivators used have diminished intrinsic motivation within people. They require dismantling and replacement.

This presentation introduces 4 intrinsic motivators that must be cultivated in all people to ensure integrity, alignment, follow-through and healthy collaborative teamwork.

Creating Your Cohesive, Authentic and Collaborative Team

Strong, positive relationships are key to success but many people do not know how to create or sustain them. In this presentation, participants learn about eight values that build trust, what helps to forge strong bonds and loyalties between people, the true meaning of teamwork and how to use practices in your daily life in order to enjoy positive relationships.

Being trustworthy doesn’t guarantee you build trust. The intention of this presentation is to explore characteristics of caring relationships and know how to be part of the commitment to support others in being wildly successful.

Participants become aware of common dynamics they may fall back on under situations of duress and how to be 'at choice' to make new responses, including how to use specific tools in order to enjoy encouraging relationships and engage in collaboration needed for achieving individual and group visions and primary objectives.

Game Changing Questions: Appreciative Inquiry

Most people don’t realize the power of language and the effects of appreciative (or non-appreciative) questions. In this presentation, participants learn about and practice Appreciative Inquiry (AI), an impactful alternative to traditional problem solving or innovating. AI is a proven method for use in meetings, to overcome challenges, and achieve goals. Participants learn to draw on what has, is, and can be successful and highest vision.

Developing Accountability, Responsibility and Leadership

Challenged by people being irresponsible? Failing to follow through? Not delivering expected results? In this presentation participants are led through a process enabling each to understand the reasons for high or low accountability, including what it really means to be accountable, conditions and communications that support accountability and strategies to effect positive change. The intention of this presentation is to explore how accountability can dramatically influence life, work and relationships, enabling participants to become effective leaders who cultivate accountability in a respectful and conscious manner.

This presentation leads participants through a process enabling them to understand subconscious goals they and others operate out of related to high or low accountability. Participants leave with knowledge and strategies so they are effective inspiring responsible and accountable behavior, including follow-through based on commitment rather than resentful compliance.

Confessions of CEOs: Achieving Incredible Outcomes and The Systems Needed to Sustain Them

Kevin Shrake is no stranger to incredible outcomes! He once turned around $30M in debt in 2 years as CEO of a large hospital. He did so by creating exceptional conversations and conditions that not only show solid ROI proof of effectiveness, but also resulted in doubled employee satisfaction. Yet, here is his confession: He did not train, instill and bring in a workforce process that created sustainability when he left. In fact, within a year, the hospital was in debt again by over $20M.

Enter co-presenter Judy Ryan, who has a scalable process designed to instill into each and every employee the ability to become self-governing and capable of sustaining ongoing improvements. She confesses an addiction to personal responsibility!

This co-presentation is moving, powerful, funny, collaborative and enlightening, based on true stories, so an entire audience visualizes new possibilities they can achieve when passion, process and people are a means to accomplish purpose and vision.
