Bio

I am a Software Engineering Manager in Huntsville, Alabama who spent most of his career as a Software Developer. I have a B.S. in Electrical & Computer Engineering from UAH. Recently I began pursuing a second degree in Communication Studies. I have excellent communication skills and I enjoy using them. It lets me blend my technical and non-technical skills and give back by sharing what I have learned in my career and studies.

Manager: As a manager, I manage projects and developers. I like managing projects, but on the technical side, not just the “update task list progress” side. As part of my job as a project manager, I improved my projects process by including version control, bug tracking, continuous integration, coding standards and other software engineering techniques.

Software Developer: I have 35 years of development experience in a variety of languages, development platforms and technical areas. I have experience in object-oriented analysis, design, and programming in C++, C♯ and about a dozen other languages. My experience includes embedded software, algorithm development, hardware interfaces, motion control, TCP/IP, desktop & web applications and databases

Speaker: I also have training and experience in communication and leadership. In 2009, I joined SAIC Toastmasters as a charter member. Through Toastmasters I have learned and practiced public speaking. I have competed in many speech contests including the semifinals of the 2013 Toastmasters World Championship of Public Speaking. I also learned and practiced leadership in Toastmasters as a club officer and as the District Public Relations Manager for 2015-2016.

I have combined my technical knowledge, experiences as a manager and skills as a public speaker to create and give presentations to various groups. I have spoken on Software Engineering, Communication, Leadership and Career topics. Because of my diverse background, I particularly enjoy teaching “soft skills” such as communication and leadership to technical people.

Leadership Lessons from Your Brain

Being a manager is just about managing projects. If you want to be successful, you also need to know how to lead people. Everyone has an opinion about leadership. But where can you look for proven leadership techniques? Your brain! The presentation will examine four facts about how your brain operates. Audience activities will help demonstrate some of these principles. For each brain fact, an analogous leadership lesson will be presented. You will learn 4 rock solid principles you can use to avoid the most common pitfalls of being a leader. Each leadership lesson will be illustrated with examples from real life. If you are a manager or other leader, or what to be one, this is information you need to know. Plus, you will learn some interesting facts about how your brain works. Learn leadership lessons from a proven source: your brain!

A Practical Approach to Software Engineering

Software Engineering is often viewed as just paperwork. But if applied in a practical manner, it can improve the way your team develops software. This presentation is a high-level view of software engineering from a practical viewpoint. It will be useful to people wanting to create a software engineering process, managers who need to understand what software engineering is and those looking to improve their existing process. The presentation is not about Agile or any other specific methodology. Instead, it focuses on the reasons to use Software Engineering and its key concepts.

Some of the key concepts covered will be:

* Development Methodologies
* Phases of Software Development
* Architectural Design Patterns (MVC, etc.)
* Design Diagrams (Layer, Sequence, Class, etc.)
* Continuous Integration
* Testing (Unit, Regression, System, etc.)
* Dependency Injection
* Project Management (Including bug & progress tracking)
* Version Control

Be a Presenter People Want to Listen To

You have something to say that others need to hear: skills, experiences or maybe just a status report. How can you present it so that people want to listen? This presentation will cover four topics for being a better speaker.

1. The Communications Model puts all the principles of communication together to show how they work. Learn how receivers, transmitters, channels and encoding/decoding work together to communicate a message.

2. Why are so many people afraid of public speaking? There is a very good reason--that is actually totally irrelevant. This presentation will explain the cause of the fear of public speaking and how to overcome it.

3. Every speech should have a point. Before you create a speech, you need to know what The Point is. You will learn how to discover The Point and use it to organize your presentation.

4. Once you know the point, you need to create the speech. Learn what to put in a speech to keep people's attention and to get your point across.

This presentation combines research, personal experience and conversations with HR managers to show you what employers are looking for and what mistakes to avoid when writing your resume and interviewing.

Some topics covered:

* Should your resume have an objective line?
* What should go on the first page of your resume?
