100 Accomplished Black Canadian Women - Honouree 2020

100ABC Women spotlights the significant accomplishments, achievements and contributions made by Black Canadian women across Canada. Awarded in recognition of Our Mosaic Lives, Celebrating Black Canadian Women Project.

Speaker - Tedx U of T

The “Fit Out” Movement officially launched at the TEDxUofT “Radiance” event.
We have diversity. However, what we need is inclusion. The “Fit Out” movement encourages all individuals to show up as their authentic selves and to actively create an environment of belonging.

Co-founder Making Change

To avoid another Black History Month with no community awareness, engagement or activities planned, I co-founded Making Change in 2019. It’s a non-profit organization focused on increasing awareness of and exposure to Black people and cultures, and providing anti-Black racism education for action.

A bit about me

Michèle Newton’s lived experience as a bi-racial woman led her to feel out of place in her own skin. Finding strength in her individuality, she adopted a “better together” philosophy, becoming an Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging (EDIB) expert. Now, Michèle is bringing to light the need for not only inclusion, but true belonging for all. She's a TEDx Speaker, and founder of the Fit Out Movement.

Growing up in an all-white household with her mother and adoptive father, she couldn’t have felt less Black. Despite their continuous support, she was often between worlds, unsure where or how she belonged. Having faced racism and exclusion, Michèle’s personal encounters have inspired her to take action, building a better future through consulting, speaking, education and advocacy.

For Michèle, inspiring growth and open mindedness intersects as her mission, passion, vocation and profession. Bringing this purpose to every project, she creates safe spaces, prompting participants to look internally to discover and address their biases and infuse their personal and professional worlds with this new perspective.

As a tenured communicator with over 25 years’ experience, Michèle stresses the powerful position the communicator holds. Making the discovery that many corporate brands often hold only one viewpoint, the dominant, or white perspective, Michèle now plays an educational role in changing this mindset.

Transitioning from communications to advocacy after having her daughter, Michèle is inspired by what the future can look like for the next generation. By slowing down, switching off autopilot and committing to continuous learning, leaders, communicators, organizations and communities can chart an inclusive path forward.

The Power of Better Together

Michèle Newton’s lived experience as a bi-racial woman led her to feel unheard and out of place in her own skin. Finding strength in her individuality, she adopted a “better together” philosophy, bringing to light the need for inclusion and belonging for all.

Michèle became an activist and community changemaker. Guided by her “better together” philosophy – growing relationships, nurturing collaborations, and facilitating partnerships- she began work to strengthen her community. Through her lived experiences, Michèle shares her approach to social change.

Activism for Social Change

Carving out space that has never existed, Michèle is determined to create communities where young women like her daughter will have space to authentically exist and belong.

Michèle shares her approach to social change through her biracial, Black lived experiences. Starting at the beginning, she frames her keynote with her personal background, motivations and catalysts for the movement. Michèle explores the opposition and challenges encountered along the way and wraps up by inspiring social change through her call to action.
