Bio

When Karen’s first child was born, she stopped breathing due to a rare disorder effecting her brain. It became Karen’s mission to learn all things neuroscience in order to help her daughter reach her full potential. Drawing on her 30+ years experience as a teacher, administrator and curriculum developer, she then taught thousands of students, educators and parents to understand the power of their neurochemistry and how it drives behaviours due to anxiety and anger. She shares simple but effective techniques to ‘trick your brain’ to MoveON past these intrusive behaviours. She has worked with organizations like the University of Windsor, University of Michigan, the Greater Essex County District School Board, the Ontario Secondary School Teacher Federation, the Canadian Organization of Rare Disorders, the Council of Exceptional Children and several parent advocacy groups. She is also the author of two books as well as Past-president for the international Joubert Syndrome Foundation and founder of the Canadian Joubert Syndrome group.

MoveON: Dealing with Anxiety and Anger

It is very difficult to make rational decisions when you are in fight-flight-fight mode. Our neurochemistry is designed to keep us focused on solving the problem that is causing the stress… which is great if the problem is almost getting hit by a truck… that problem goes away. Not so great if the problem isn’t yours to resolve--- work environment; negative relationships, etc. There are concrete ways, backed by research, to increase the serotonin in your system to help you think clearly again.

Are You In Tune?

Have you ever had a joke fall flat? Or a sharp comment thrown at you? This keynote explores reasons why our conversations are sometimes out of tune. Karen will teach you simple activities to help calm your brain so that you can focus on staying in harmony with your team’s communications.

Label of Care

Karen’s story is both poignant and humourous. Audience members will become inspired to become active advocates in their own lives… regardless of the situation they are currently experiencing.

The Power of Drama in Education

Drama isn’t just for the stage! Karen’s success in education, including teaching students who ‘just don’t do school’, has given her great insight into how the Arts can enhance student success in any subject area.

  • Karen is a truly fantastic speaker. I had the pleasure of sitting in on her "MoveON: Dealing with Anxiety and Anger" talk and was blown away. I'm dealing with a lot of anger, but I came out of it very self-reflective and thinking "I really needed to hear that." It was incredibly insightful and wasn't, for lack of a better term, "dumbed down." I don't generally subscribe to what you might call "motivational talks" because I feel like they're filled with nonsensical buzzwords and affirmations that might rhyme but don't actually make sense. This wasn't anything like that. Karen's presentations were an intellectual therapeutic massage of the soul and she responded to questions like you were the only one in the room. One of the best - I look forward to catching more of her talks.

  • I watched your webinar, and loved your passion. You had lots of energy and spoke in a welcoming, conversational tone. I also liked your relatable examples and metaphors (e.g. rose in an onion), that were firmly based in research. Thank you!
