Bio

Dr. Jasmine L. Harris is a tenured professor, published author, award-winning researcher, and speaker on the issues of Black marginalization at school, at work, and in treatment. She's available to speak to school faculty and administrators, organizational decision-makers, and scholars interested in learning from and about communities to which they are responsible but unfamiliar.

More specifically, Dr. Harris is an Associate Professor of African-American Studies and Coordinator of the African-American Studies Program in the Department of Race, Ethnicity, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at the University of Texas, San Antonio. Dr. Harris completed her Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota in 2013, working first as Visiting Assistant Professor of Sociology at Wake Forest University before joining the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Ursinus College outside of Philadelphia in 2014. She earned tenure in 2020. Dr. Harris views her research, teaching, and service as intertwined, influencing and shaping each other. Her examinations of Black life in predominately white spaces are founded on personal experiences. They include Black students at PWIs, Black DI football and men's basketball players at universities in the Power 5 conferences, and Black sociologists producing knowledge in a white-dominated discipline. Dr. Harris has been published in major newspapers across the country, including the Houston Chronicle and the Chicago Tribune. She was recently featured in the Vice News documentary, "College Sports, Inc." Represented by The Howland Literary Agency in New York City, her forthcoming book, "Blackademics: The Disturbing Education of Black Girls in American Schools" is a lead title from Broadleaf Books for publication in Spring 2024.

Black women have been boxed out of modern feminism despite their origins of leaders of the women's rights movements. This presentation explores the history of feminist ideals and Black women's role as founders of the movement. This is the perfect talk for Women's History Month.

Discerning DEI in Organizations

As diversity, equity, and inclusion become buzz words in organizations there are many misunderstandings of what these concepts mean and how they impact individual organizations. This presentation clarifies DEI and teaches organizations how to best apply them.

Juneteenth and Other Issues

This talk is perfect for Juneteenth commemoration. We’ll discuss the importance of the day and why it’s important for organizations to acknowledge it. We’ll also talk about the differences between allyship and advocacy among employees, the connections to events like Juneteenth.

Allyship and Advocacy in Organizations

Ever wondered how best to support a diverse set of employees? This talk focuses on the differences between allyship and advocacy in organizations, how to apply the concepts to create a culture focused on DEI, and provides examples of outcomes from other companies that have worked hard to shift their organizations in this way.
