Having lost of mother at the age of 9 to Leukaemia, I was extremely close to my paternal grandmother. So when she was diagnosis with dementia when I was 19, my world fell apart again.

I went on to university to study meteorology and environmental science, training to become a Meteorologist, commissioning as an RAF Officer from RAF Cranwell in 2016. I was then employed by the Met Office and the Royal Air Force to forecast for both fixed wing and rotary assets.

My grandmother became increasingly ill however and I realised the health and social care system that was supposed to be looking after my grandmother, was actually doing the opposite. My nan, Pat, unfortunately passed away in December 2012.

I vowed to improve things for other families of loved ones with life limiting illnesses, so they didn't have to go through what my nan went through with the lack of access to her community and hobbies. Her ending was undignified, unstimulating, unfamiliar and her independence had been stripped away.

Adorno Companions now provide life changing independence support to individuals with life limiting illnesses such as dementia.

Unpaid carers are under more pressure than ever. Lacking community and local family support. People living on their own with dementia are often impacted by loneliness putting them at greater risk of poorer mental and physical health. Social isolation is associated with about a 50% increased risk of dementia.

We provide one to one support workers at home and community based weekly respite clubs.

We only ever send the same support worker, our clients are matched based on interests and location.
