I like to think I’m a strong man, but my life was rocked to the core by my divorce. I didn’t want a divorce, and thinking about my 2-year-old girls growing without both parents broke my heart. I didn’t have too much on my side at that time: no other family in this country, no enough savings to afford attorneys and fees, and no close friends really.
Feelings of loneliness and isolation were my new companions. I experienced pure panic. I fought just to keep day to day emotional balance and mental stability to keep functioning in my day-to-day responsibilities. I struggled with bitterness, anger, mutual nastiness, and violations of final judgment.
The spiritual emptiness was huge. I felt discriminated by gender and race by many of my “Brothers, Sisters and Leaders”. My ward backed away, treated me differently, acted uncomfortable around me, or they disappeared.
It didn’t happen overnight, but I did find my way out of it. I adjusted my life to be close to my daughters so I wouldn't miss any of the important moments of our relationship.
One big turning point came to me when I realize how important it is to be able to see and think clearly without emotions taking control of my mind/thoughts and choices/behaviors. I strove to see every day things from the Gospel of Jesus Christ’s perspective. That led me to great understanding and knowledge of how to take the challenges of divorce for evolution, have a wonderful loving relationship with my daughters, and becoming a tool of Heavenly Father to help others.
For me, divorce was a catalyst to discover what is really important in life, what is not, and I was able to use it as a springboard to evolve and become the wonderful, powerful human being we were born to be.
