Gamify your ergonomics training

Familiar games like Jenga, Operation, and Kerplunk draw people into lively conversations, and foster friendly competition. Have you ever considered integrating games into your ergonomics training? This presentation demonstrates how integrating games into hands-on practical training can help employees to appreciate the value of ergonomics, not only in improving comfort and MSD prevention, but also in optimizing performance and employee engagement.

Identifying ergonomic work practices, and training employees to use them

We've been trying to teach workers to lift with their legs bent for 40 years or more, and yet we have back injuries. Maybe we need to look at work techniques differently. To identify truly "ergonomic" strategies, we need to understand what's wrong with the common practice, what advantage is provided by the promoted practice, and what factors limit the use of this preferred method. This presentation reviews an objective method that was developed to identify ergonomic work strategies in physical work, and how we train workers to use them.

Aging and ergonomics

First, the good news...aging workers are a wealth of experience that can be tapped to provide mentorship for younger workers. But not everything about aging is good. This presentation reviews the physical, cognitive, and social changes that occur as workers age, and suggests methods to help fit work to these workers.

How can an ergonomist help an HR professional?

When you Google "Human Resources" a featured snippet declares that human resource activities fall under the following five core functions: staffing, development, compensation, safety and health, and employee and labour relations. As ergonomists, we are also concerned with human resources, although perhaps from a slightly different perspective. How can these five HR functions can be supported by an ergonomist? What can HR professionals expect, when they engage with an ergonomist?

How can an ergonomist help a Safety Professional?

Safety Professionals help organizations to reduce, or even eliminate, the risk of workplace accidents and injuries. Most safety programs rightly prioritize efforts to manage hazards that could cause serious injury or death crushing hazards, chemical exposures, falls from heights, and confined space, as a few examples. Logically, most Safety Managers spend the better part of the day ensuring compliance with legislation. However, when we look at the injuries that occur in the workplace, the majority of claims, almost half of them, relate to strain/sprain injuries. What does an ergonomist bring to the safety table?
