Lawyers are not businessmen. They are not salesmen (well not very good ones, anyway) or business development professionals. Don’t even get me started on how bad lawyers are in marketing themselves.
But a good lawyer, no… a great lawyer needs to be all of these things and more.
This is where I come in. My name is Camisha Simmons and I am the managing partner and founder of Simmons Legal PLLC, a certified woman-owned, minority-owned and veteran-owned transactional and civil dispute, resolution and litigation law firm dedicated to assisting debtors, creditors and other parties in protecting their assets in the event of an insolvency, bankruptcy, distressed debt workout, financing transaction and/or litigation matters.
But this is just my day job (and I am really good at it!). In 2013, Texas Lawyer named me to its inaugural list of Legal Leaders on the Rise. I have also been named a Texas Rising Star for three consecutive years (2014 through 2016) by SuperLawyers®, a Thomson Reuters rating service. Additionally, in 2015, the National Black Lawyers named me a “Top 40 Under 40” attorney.
In addition to excelling in the practice of law, I enjoy and am passionate about networking and business development. I also enjoy teaching others how to, as I have, embrace the world of business development and the art of networking. As an Affiliate Professor of Law at UNT Dallas College of Law, I work directly with new and upcoming lawyers in understanding and mastering the critical skills needed to excel in today’s already saturated market place.
Additionally, I love working with companies throughout a wide variety of industries, including the Oil & Gas, Investment, Health Care, Real Estate, and Banking/Financial Services industries. I am regularly asked to speak on and contribute my expertise and experiences on a wide variety of topics at industry specific conferences, workshops and panel discussions.
Some of my customized presentations include… “Unique Issues Involved in Oil & Gas Bankruptcies & Restructurings”; “Assuring e-Discovery Does Not Become an e-Disaster”; “How ‘Obama-Care’ is Impacting Small Businesses”; “Privacy and Data Protection in Bankruptcy” and “Is Easier Dismissal the Better Part of Jurisprudence?”…just to name a few.
As the fifth of my mother’s 11 children growing up in Victoria, TX, I learned the value of hard work and pursuing a goal until it is achieved. That lesson contributed greatly to my success in the US Army and completing my Doctor of Jurisprudence (JD) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) degrees from Texas Tech University (I completed both degrees at the same time and graduated Magna Cum Laude). Additionally, I hold an MEd in Counseling and Personnel Services from University of Maryland College Park; and BBA from Campbell University.
I am licensed to practice law in Texas and New York, with a principal office in Dallas, Texas and by-appointment only in New York, New York.
