Bio

Andrew Arboe is an autistic self-advocate with a professional work background consisting of public school, private school, nonprofits, and online programs. Andrew is also certified through the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards’ Autism Certification since August 14th. His current workplaces include FOCUS Center for Autism, Anderson Center for Autism, and the Children Hospital of Philadelphia. Andrew is also a public speaker known throughout New England for his personal experiences with autism through his "Andrew Arboe: Autistic Self-Advocate and Speaker" brand. Andrew serves on the boards of Neurodiversity Employment Network and Disability Rights Connecticut. Andrew graduated from Manchester Community College with an associate degree as a Disability Specialist and Charter Oak State College with a bachelor’s degree in psychology.

What Driving Provided to Me: An Autistic Perspective on Driving

Learn from a self-advocate on how he got into driving and how that ended up empowering him ever since then. Learning to drive had its barriers from a lack of discussion from an autistic individual perspective. With little to work from, Andrew had to do it on his own and with his dad. Once he obtained his license, he advocated for driving resources ever since to make life more doable for autistic individuals. Andrew goes over driving strategies and real-life examples of his favorite drives. Over 5 years of insight from all his driving journeys.

Fulfilling Sensory Needs

Each autistic person has their own sensory needs and challenges. This presentation goes over each sense and strategies to help you manage your needs. This presentation is targeted towards parents with children or older individuals.

Planning for Employment

Due to the employment situation with autistic individuals, this goes over what to do in order to gain employment and going over the standards for doing interviews and being ready for success. This presentation also goes over self-employment as well and Andrew will go over his experiences running Driving with Autism and the lessons he learned.

Exploration of Special Interests and How They Shaped my Life

We go over the autism term for special interests, hobbies that may go into pathways for individuals to explore. I go over my personal experiences.

Planning Your Transition Roadmap

Originally presented with a few students at Manchester Community College in Connecticut, this presentation goes over how to make the most out of college. I also go over transportation, employment and other aspects of college.

Based on an employment experience in which Andrew was laid off, he goes over how to create a routine while job hunting. He goes over his process of what career paths he could invest in and what organizational methods he uses to document information. Most importantly, Andrew goes over how to recover from a lay off and be your best self.

Designed for school professionals, this topic goes over tips to make your job coaching go to the next level. Having job coached for almost three years, Andrew will review concepts and experiences he had to help you make the most out of this impactful role.

Public Speaking 101

Designed for young adults who want to pursue their advocacy in workshop settings and legislative efforts. We go over how the components of public speaking like finding a mission to present about and where to market yourself towards places you aim to present.

Navigating College

This represents a basic overview of college concepts like selecting a major, creating routine, using accommodations and other resources. Financial aid and other options are discussed with personal perspectives from Andrew who attended both in-person and online colleges.

Job Interview Basics

Job Interviews can be a challenge for individuals, so this presentation aims to make the interview more doable. Andrew goes over what to do prior to the interview, how to present yourself and the post-interview.

Navigating Barriers and Overcoming Them

This presentation will cover how barriers can impact how individuals can achieve their major goals. It is also discussed is how engaging in problem solving techniques can decrease these barriers to be empowered in life. Andrew Arboe will touch upon his own experiences in how he dealt with barriers to achieve his goals and how to manage some failures along the way. Self-advocates and families are super welcome to attend this workshop.

Balancing FOMO: Fear of Missing Out

Fear of missing out is a fascinating psychology concept where people want to be engaged or obtain an item to not be behind others. It affects people's decision making in general and it is especially important in budgeting your money. Andrew is going to use his experiences on how he handled FOMO and the lessons he learned. FOMO is not inherently bad, and it can be something to balance overtime to be our best selves.

​Parent Strategies for Facilitating Driving Practice

The idea of their teens and older adults driving can cause anxiety to their parents. Even more when autism is in the picture. Anxiety can be an internal barrier to people trying to achieve their goals, including driving. Having seen his dad in action during his practice and speaking to many families, Andrew created this presentation to break this barrier down. Andrew will go over the best strategies to empower you and your teens. Andrew will also go over some red flags to note and what strategies to avoid overtime.

Taking the Extra Steps: Teacher Assistant Tips!

Drawn from his experiences from working at a public and private school systems, Andrew wants to give back to the special education landscape with this topic targeting teacher assistants/ales/paraprofessionals. This presentation will review various tips and instructional strategies to give your staff an edge in their work. Being proactive is key for working in special education, therefore empowering your students!

Using Play to Create Routine & Purpose for Autistic Adults

Inspired by the play theory of Straut Brown, Andrew makes a case for professionals to invest in using play histories of young adults to create routines to establish structures after aging out of school. Andrew uses his own experiences to illustrate how using childhood passions introduced him to life themes and by finding a community group helped increase his self-confidence. His own play style helped him find purpose and be empowered in finding his professional passion through autism work.

Finding Inspiration from Gaming Narratives: How Gaming Influenced my Life

People worldwide use characters and stories from all sorts of media sources to find inspiration and video games are no exception. For staff from schools and providers who want to connect more with their individuals, Andrew will go over his own inspirations that led him to his autism advocacy. Learn what story themes to identify and how the narrative and its characters can influence people to find their inner strengths. Inspired by Andrew’s own journey in establishing his special interests.

Reframing Post-Transitioning to Adulthood

Transition or aging out of special education services can be scary for anyone to the point that is the perception it makes for itself. It is a perception that makes people miss various opportunities and experience negative mental health issues. Andrew believes that it doesn’t have to be this perception and that reframing it as a journey can help families and individuals move forward as life does not end at age 22. By self-pacing and following your strengths, you can make transitioning more positive, while accepting the scary/negative perception around you.

Freelancing 101

This unusual employment presentation focuses on why one would do freelance along with reviewing the positives and negatives of this pathway. Andrew’s own brand will be used as an example of his freelancing and an Indepth look on how he operates it. Learn about the tools you can use and how to create the desired portfolio/website platform for your path.

Outsider's Take on Autism, Adulthood and Connection

Andrew Arboe goes over his childhood and the inspirations that shaped him into the adult he is today. Andrew believes that these inspirations shaped his viewpoints and how he handles autism advocacy as a outsider due to lack of resources upon aging out. Due to being absent to the Autism scene until 2015/2016 and going the professional route, it gives him a gray take on autism. He covers his ten-year journey in this presentation with various real-life examples, photos. He finally gives advice to not just advocates, but parents as well on what he learned overall to celebrate life.

Calming Effects of Pet Relationships: Lessons I learned from Sky the Puppy!

This presentation goes over the health benefits of being a pet owner and the bond between dog and a person. Research show the health benefits that autistic people may receive from dogs. This goes over my perspective in raising Sky, the German Shepherd puppy. Sky legit made Andrew into a better human and became a popular mascot for my brand. Videos, photos and stories are shared during this presentation.

Housing: Setting up a Roommate Arrangement

This topic goes over the key components of engaging in a roommate arrangement for housing. Andrew will review his lived experience of setting up the arrangement and the steps it took to make it official. Those steps follow from doing meetings to see the compatibility of yourself and the roommate themselves and setting up mock runs to try it out in a real setting. It also goes over the challenges and practical tips of making sure the arrangement and environment works with you.

Growing up in Special Education: The Ups and Downs of my Journey

Andrew talks about his experiences growing up in special education classes throughout his school life. Looking at his professional lens from working in two schools as a paraprofessional/teacher assistant, he tells what the department did well and what areas could have been done better. Andrew hopes that can provide his audience with ideas of how they can engage with not just autistic students, but every other population in special education. Andrew made this presentation for those who come after him.

My Wish for Future Employment Programs

Originally presented for the 2025 ICAN Autism Conference, I go over my wishes for employment programs, companies and providers can consider for their autism initiatives. I go over how stereotypes affected my initial employment search and how I came in terms of being in the human services field. I make a case of embracing the diversity of the community in creating programs in non-tech fields like education and looking at existing inclusive models and experiences can serve as inspiration for future investment in models and programs.
