Eliyahu Mirlis is an American painter, who is recognized internationally. He is considered one of the greatest modern abstract artists in New Jersey.
He was born in 1956 in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Raised among artists, he studied briefly at an theater set design studio, where he learned some painting skills that will help him later.
In 1975 Mirlis enrolled at the New Jersey City University, where he graduated and obtained his BA in Fine Arts.
A year after graduating, he exhibited his artworks at the Montclair Art Museum and the following year he held his first individual exhibition New York Art Gallery.
The art exhibition was heavily influenced by brut art, a style that Mirlis had discovered in 1970, before beginning his formal art studies. During this time, Mirlis began to develop a style of painting that involves creating overlapping layers of materials.
During the 80s, he exhibited his artworks in Europe and gained international recognition.
Eliyahu Mirlis has spent long periods of time in the Amazon rainforest, and some of his creations reveal Amazonian influences. His work represents an eternal exploration of new forms of expression in which he experiments with different techniques, materials, textures, perspectives of light and colors. A recurring theme in Mirlis’ art is the nature, approached from different angles, a motif that could suggest a strong relationship with the Amazonian rainforest.
