High Speed, Low Drag: Building a High Performing Team

Teams are needed because the world we live in requires constant experimentation, a continual response to changing conditions. In our exploration of new conditions and possibilities, we have to rapidly integrate new partners and different work disciplines. The team structure adapts most easily to changing conditions and has the greatest potential for creative solutions and new approaches to work challenges.

We provide a successful team development process that facilitates the development of a new team or the revitalization of an existing team. Whether your team is an ongoing work group, or a special project based team of limited duration, you will rapidly increase its effectiveness with the use of these teamwork tools and skills.

Crisis Management: Navigating the Storm

A crisis is a defining moment for an organization. The way a company manages an adverse event—particularly in the current economic environment—can severely threaten or greatly enhance its operations, investor confidence, customer loyalty, employee morale, and community standing—essentially its reputation. Preparing for a crisis is not a luxury; it is a necessity. The odds are high that your organization will suffer a disaster or crisis at some point. You cannot say you weren't ready; today's extreme public and government scrutiny demand that you should have been prepared.

Sweet Emotion: How Emotions Influence Leaders

Our ability to deal effectively with our emotions in the work place is critical to our success as leaders. As the pace of the world increases and our environment makes more and more demands on our cognitive, emotional and physical resources, Emotional Intelligence is increasingly critical as a skill set. Emotional Intelligence strategies combine with native intelligence increase our ability to successfully manage the constant challenges from those we serve and those we lead.
Through skill building exercises, and group discussion, this course will provide you with the opportunity to identify your own challenges in maintaining positive environments and collaborative relationships as well as overcoming resistance and negativity. Participants will explore tools, techniques, skills and perceptions to perform your role and manage your emotions with confidence and positive results

Radioactive Relationships and Conflict Management

Conflict is inevitable within an organization and the art of conflict management holds the key to professional growth as well as developing personal relationships. To be an effective leader, one must be skilled in the art of conflict resolution and personality management as toxic co-workers and conflict can have a negative effect on one’s health, career, and other relationships.
Toxic employees work methodically and selfishly, acting as a cancer in the workplace and actively disrupting the peace whereby your success, happiness, and general wellbeing is subsequently affected.
This presentation addresses how to identify and handle those toxic personalities and how to successfully navigate through conflict as a leader to produce a productive and workplace.

Critical Mass: Critical Thinking During High Stress Events

Stress plays a major role in the ability to use cognitive processes and to think critically. As stress levels increase, adrenal and pituitary glands release certain chemicals that increase the heart rate to make the body run from danger. If there is no immediate danger, the stress hormones that were released remain in the body, continually promoting uneasiness and increasing stress levels. When the stress hormone cortisol accumulates too much, it can damage brain cells, affecting memory and other cognitive processes. Stressors consume the brain’s energy, preventing other functions, and create irrational, illogical thought. Stress also overworks the amygdala, the emotion regulating part of the brain, resulting in the inability of the prefrontal cortex to engage in critical thinking.
This presentation looks at how stress affects our ability to think critically and reduces our ability to make practical decisions and how we can reduce stress to make better decisions during critical times

Under the Influence: Tradition, Culture, and Firefighter Suicide

This program is designed to bring awareness to firefighter suicide, the leading reasons for firefighter suicide, what stress is, and to create discussion on what the research is telling us. This program will review studies and research into firefighter suicide, addiction, substance abuse, and how it affects the firefighter and their marriage/family. We will discuss the tradition of the fire service in relation to this issue and how leadership can directly influence the positive change required to shift the culture to a culture that is more adapt to handle these issues. Finally, we will review a case studies from the Newport News Fire Department involving an attempted suicide and a completed suicide and provide additional resources to help those who are struggling with stress.
