Bio

I was a university professor for 18 years in the field of educational/cognitive psychology. My research and teaching centered on improving college access, retention, and success for students with diverse backgrounds. During this time, I had some incredible opportunities and experiences and worked with some outstanding students. I assumed I would be a professor until I retired.

In the fall of 2015 I began experiencing extreme career burnout along with severe depression surrounding the upcoming 18th anniversary of my mother’s death. Both of these events would prompt me to walk away from everything and take the next year to closely examine not only these issues but also other negative experiences and events from my past, including domestic violence, through what I now call my "Evince Journey" – similar to Elizabeth Gilbert’s Eat, Pray, Love Journey. Evince means ‘to show or make clear.’

Drawing from courses I taught and approaches I used in advising and mentoring students, I was able to fully identify, embrace, and understand my personal story and what it was intended to teach me. These include transformative learning, critical reflection, and autoethnography. By learning to reframe not only how I understood past and present negative circumstances but also reconnecting with my values, this collective insight gave me clarity into my life purpose and future goals. And while the journey does incorporate some specific processes, it really is about a way of living. I chronicle this experience in my upcoming book "Evince: A Memoir of A Journey ‘To Show and Make Clear.'"

Over the past nearly three decades, I have consulted with and delivered numerous presentations to educational, non-profit, government, and corporate entities both domestically and internationally focused on improving individual and organizational performance. I am now interested in ‘showing and making clear’ to others by helping them embrace and learn from their own personal stories.

To Show & Make Clear: Embracing Your Story, Embracing Your Journey

Personal stories are powerful holding insight and meaning and offering encouragement. My own story has taught me life can really suck. But it has also shown me when we take the time to dig down deep and look at these negative life experiences and events, we can get past the facts as we understand them to the hidden meaning they hold. I share my model of reflection and transformation serving as the basis for my year-long journey looking back and extracting the lessons from the negative experiences and events comprising my story including abuse, death, depression, and career burnout. It now serves as my approach to life going forward. Based on the idea Suffering + Reflection = Growth, the resulting insights helped me revise and replace outdated, unproductive, and unhealthy mental frameworks in order to find renewed purpose, clearer direction, satisfaction, and happiness. These growth outcomes can be experienced by anyone willing to engage in the process and should be seen as gifts.

Propelling What Comes Next: Honoring & Celebrating Pinnacles

I reached my pinnacle as a university professor after an 18-year career. I realized signs had begun emerging approximately four years earlier revealing I was no longer finding real pleasure, reward, or joy in my work and it was time to move on to something new. So what does a pinnacle actually look like? How do you admit you’re no longer happy in what you were trained to do and what you’ve spent your life doing? How do you subsequently dare to make a change because it no longer grows you? How do you know when to end where you still have something creatively left that propels you into what comes next? In this presentation I share how I went about finding the answers to these questions – including the litmus test I devised for myself – giving me clear insight allowing me to accept and understand the difference between the idea of a situation and the reality of it. Becoming excited for the next chapter of life to start.

Finding a Home For Grief

Grief is a multifaceted response to loss. It can’t be “fixed” nor do we ever get completely over the loss. We only get through it. But in order to do so, it is important to understand grief is not just about the permanence of the person’s absence. It’s what we have lost as a result of this absence. During this time, I share my 18-year experience dealing with my grief over the loss of my mom. I discovered the intense emotion was rooted in the loss of three distinct aspects making my mom my mom. Once I understood this about my grief, I was able to find productive and healthy ways of responding to each area of loss individually and uniquely when the related emotions would surface. I share how I arrived at this place so others can potentially find this same place for themselves. As a result, I now believe some of the best living by those no longer here can happen through the people they leave behind.

Depression: The Constant Hangover

I have suffered from depression for as far back as I can remember from feeling a little sad all the way to extreme hopelessness, despair, and apathy, lasting anywhere from a couple of days to years. It led to a suicide attempt right after college and several episodes of suicide ideation since. By taking the time to better understand the root causes of my depression, I’ve been able to find ways to manage it – not eliminate it. It’s a permanent part of my physical, spiritual, and chemical make-up. Here I share my past and current story of depression because we need to keep talking about it and how to address it like we would any other illness. And while there are similarities across the stories of people suffering from depression, I’ve also found there’s always something very unique to each experience – potentially offering insight, comfort, understanding, and peace to those who share this same unique element but feeling like they are the only one for whom it is part of their experience.

Living Forward: Making the Next Chapters of Your Life the Best

As I approached 50, I found myself excited for the opportunities being at this age and place in my life would bring. I was looking forward to turning 50. I knew what was important. I knew the type of people I wanted in my life. I knew what I fully valued, needed to be nurtured, and needed to be given priority thereby driving my future decisions. And even though I’m likely closer to the end of my life than I am the beginning, I’m excited about whatever years remain. In this presentation, I share what I’ve learned about living forward. Learning how to live forward is especially important after a significant life transition and/or transformation, which was where I was at in my life. It can be a scary place but by taking the time to determine what really matters and accepting some important facts of life, the best years can still be those to come.
