Bio

SJ Janjua (they/them) is the founder and consultant of Empowered for Equity Consulting, LLC. They spent several years teaching high school level English in the United States and abroad at the start of their career, and eventually left the classroom in pursuit of a master's degree. They obtained their master's degree in International Education from George Washington University and served as a classroom observer, curriculum developer, and teacher trainer in the years following. As a result of working at Higher Achievement, a mid-Atlantic based out-of-school time program, they began doing formalized Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion work in the education space. Currently they work with schools and non-profit organizations on LGBTQ+ inclusion, creating and fostering spaces for belonging, culturally responsive teaching, and more! National Coming Out Day 2023 (October 11)

I'd be delighted to speak about National Coming Out Day 2023 (October 11) and its significance to the LGBTQ+ community. As someone who is transgender, non-binary, and queer, I "come out" every day as I move through the world. This is something people outside of the LGBTQ+ community don't realize or understand the burden of. National Coming Out Day is a celebration of the courage it takes to come out, and the LGBTQ+ community.

Strategies for Affirming the Identities and Experiences of LGBTQ+ Students

We often think of harm as being the negative result of actions or words. However, harm may also be caused by what we don’t do or say. Come learn ways to more intentionally create identity-safe and affirming spaces for LGBTQ+ students.

Gender Expansive Identities 101: Beyond the Gender Binary

They/them? Ze/zim? He/they? Confused about pronouns? Feeling out of the loop on the labels used to describe gender identity? This workshop covers the basics of pronoun usage, what to do when you misgender someone, the gender spectrum, and unpacking our assumptions about gender. This space also acts as a safe space to practice affirming pronoun usage and to ask questions!

Affirming and Supporting LGBTQ+ Employees

In order to be truly inclusive, we have to ensure that everyone at our organizations feels like they can bring their whole selves to work. LGBTQ+ employees are often the most othered in the workplace and a lack of education on how to best support this group is a large part of that. Participants of this workshop will walk away with the skills necessary to create more inclusive policies for LGBTQ+ staff, interrupt identity-based harassment and microaggressions, and to initiate allyship on a wider scale.
