The role of data in green software engineering

Green Software Engineering isn't limited to delivering a product with an environmentally sustainable purpose. The goal is to create reliable software that meets the needs of user requirements while reducing ecological impacts. This implies writing clean code and maintainable code that can last if it needs to. The hosting infrastructure has to be selected with sustainability and performance in mind. And when it comes to data, the implications are quite huge. The phrase "data is the new oil" does not only have to be evaluated from a "value perspective" but also from an environmental one: Studies show that up to 7 kWh per Gigabyte are needed to store data. In this talk, we will go into detail about the planning of infrastructure and systems in both backend and frontend to reduce the environmental impact.
