Bio

Steve is a talented public speaker, recognized futurist and widely-quoted technology authority who can unleash the potential for innovation in your organization when he gives you a glimpse of the future, conveys the excitement of new technologies and explains what they might mean for your business.

Advances in technology will affect the business world in ways that we cannot imagine. For example, the use of robots will alter employment levels and how jobs will be learned and structured, 3D printing technology will cause shifts in manufacturing capabilities, regenerative medicine will heal and rebuild our bodies and alter medical care practices, and artificial intelligence will manage many of our businesses. Self-driving cars may do away with the need for car services and taxicabs and may drastically decrease insurance company revenues. Indeed, entire countries and economies will be transformed such that we will be forced to alter rapidly our business strategies. The key to adapting to, and profiting from, these coming changes is to understand them.

Steve has a talent for describing complex concepts in science and technology (and their social and ethical implications) in an entertaining and easy-going manner using humor, personal experiences and clear and understandable language while drawing from his large repertoire of videos, images, and news articles. As a client said, "Your mastery of the information coupled with the exciting visuals made this a totally engaging experience...You opened a door to the future that is truly exhilarating." He is as comfortable presenting to scientific meetings and plenary sessions in large auditoriums as he is talking to venture capitalists and corporate directors in small conference rooms.

Presentations are not "canned." Technology is constantly changing and Steve's lectures reflect that dynamism. He works with you to develop a customized presentation in one or more of topic areas to meet your group's needs.

He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a B.A. in biology, a M.S. in insect physiology and a Ph.D. in the field of immunogenetics and transplantation biology. Following completion of a postdoctoral fellowship at the Institute for Cancer Research in Philadelphia he joined the National Institutes of Health, the world's premier biomedical research organization, where he had over thirty-one years experience as a researcher, administrator and senior executive.

Steve specializes in topics related to:

• Aging Research

• Biomedical Advances

• Biometrics

• Bionics and Human Enhancement

The Technology of Hope

Technology sometimes has the reputation of being complicated and arcane and, while it may provide us with conveniences like smartphones and computers, does little to enhance our underlying quality of life. That is far from the truth. Using graphics, videos and easily understandable language I profile examples of all the good that technology can accomplish in our society including, for example, the use of nanotechnology to treat cancer, 3D printing to create low cost artificial limbs for children so that a little boy born without an arm can enjoy life again, how a ballroom dancer who lost a leg in the Boston Marathon bombing can dance once again using a bionic limb and how (using my own finger as an example) regenerative medicine can be used to restore a partially amputated finger tip.

3D Printing: The Next Disruptive Technology

3D printing is a manufacturing process that involves adding materials to create the desired finished product. This is in contrast to traditional methods of manufacturing that are "subtractive" and involve drilling, cutting and the like. 3D printing is applicable not only to inanimate objects but can also be used to create living structures like organs.

Cybersecurity: Keeping Safe in a Digital World

It seems like every day the news is filled with stories about computer crime and hacking which affects our financial institutions, banks, small businesses, large corporations, hospitals, retail stores and threatens to steal our own identity.

Cybersecurity refers to the practice of defending computers, networks and data from malicious attacks. This presentation discusses many aspects of cybersecurity and information assurance (that is, making sure that information and data are always available, protected and accurate), including viruses, phishing, social engineering, identity theft and personal privacy. We will also discuss passwords, encryption, malware, threats to the Internet of Things and physical security and provide tips on how to protect yourself and your computers from these threats. This presentation can be customized to also include an in-depth review of security issues related to the health care, retail and manufacturing industries as well as the financial sector.

Aging, Nutrition and Life Extension

This program presents a comprehensive view of all aspects of biological aging, ranging from theories that explain why aging occurs, to a guideline for healthy living to how life might be extended beyond what is considered to be the normal lifespan.

There is a detailed discussion of various diets, including the Mediterranean Diet, MIND Diet and Paleo diet. We also discuss dietary oils, vitamin supplements, alcohol, spices and herbs, the benefits of coffee and cacao, and the effects of aspirin and low vitamin D. Within the area of life extension, attention is paid to caloric restriction, intermittent fasting techniques, exercise, and the effects of infusing young blood into older organisms.

This program is suitable for all groups that wish to maintain their health while aging.

Nanotechnology: The Very Small Looms Very Large

An overview of the rapidly-growing area of nanotechnology which entails working with materials in the 1-100 nanometer range (for example, a sheet of paper is about 100,000 nanometers thick and a human fingernail grows about one nanometer in a second). This presentation discusses the latest engineering and medical applications of nanotechnology illustrated by graphics and videos.

Emerging Technologies: Where WIll You Be Skating?

This presentation is customized for each audience and will discuss the fundamentals of, and latest developments in, a variety of technologies that can include selections from the following:
• Aging Research
• Biomedical Advances
• Biometrics
• Bionics and Human Enhancement
• Brain-Machine Interactions
• Drones*
• Electric Vehicles
• Future Trends
• Internet of Things
• Nanotechnology*
• Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)
• Robotics
• Tracking technology*
• Wearable Technology*
• 3D Printing
(Topics indicated with an * were the subject of recently published articles I have written)

Due Diligence and Emerging Technologies

It is the role of Boards of Directors to oversee a company's risk management activities. This, however, is becoming increasingly more difficult when board members may lack the expertise to deal with issues raised by emerging technologies such as nanotechnology, 3D printing, robotics and bionics. They may not know the significance of the information that has been presented to them by management, know what questions to ask to determine its validity or don't realize that outside expertise may be needed. This presentation discusses how boards can reconcile their oversight responsibilities with the newest technologies.
