Bio

Sam Lewis retired from the U.S. Army with the rank of First Sergeant (1SG). His world-wide assignment experiences include being stationed in Cold War Germany when the Berlin Wall came down; he deployed to support the LA Police Department during the 1992 Los Angeles Watts riot; and was Company First Sergeant in the Republic of Korea at a time when North Korea conducted its first successful nuclear test. Sam flew on combat air assault missions over the Zagros Mountains of Northern Iraq providing humanitarian relief and security to Iraq’s Kurdish people; and he led a WMD team in search of Iraq’s hidden arsenal of weapons—capable of mass destruction. Sam is a veteran of Operations Desert Storm and Provide Comfort and is a combat veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Sam’s leadership experiences include holding every NCO leadership position in an Army company, with six consecutive years as a small unit leader. Following that, Sam served as a Drill SGT, then basic training Company 1SG. Afterward, he was assigned to be 2nd Infantry Division Headquarters Support Company 1SG in the Republic of Korea. 1SG Lewis’s final leadership position was Team Sergeant for a 14 Soldier specialized joint CBRNe and EOD response team; Sam’s team deployed to Iraq to cover the whole theater of operations. 1SG (Ret.) Lewis’s highest military award is the Bronze Service Star.

Leader Philosophy

Through 20 years of military service and two conflicts, all of the things that I wanted for myself came true. But I learned some valuable lessons along the way. I learned that none of my self-centered motivations meant anything because leading Soldiers is the most selfless duties a person can have. I also learned that the best leaders are the ones who are preparing to lead, not the ones who are waiting to lead. The final lesson that I learned is that being the team captain and leading at school is real-world leadership.

9/11 Speech BVVM Memorial

Thank you, for coming out to remember the 55 active-duty military service members, 423 brave first responders, and the great-many civilians who died as a result of the 11 September 2001 cowardly-terrorist-attacks on our homeland.  Comprising those brave first responders were 71 law enforcement officers; 8 hospital paramedics; and 343 male and female municipal firefighters …  What does their sacrifice mean?

Adaptive Expertise

It was our first mission in Iraq and my last assignment in the Army, I was the senior enlisted person in charge of a weapons of mass destruction (WMD) search and destroy team. Our mission was to respond to intelligence reports of possible WMD, gather evidence and take samples, then blow up everything we left behind. Before deployment, we trained for every foreseeable mission; we had the best communications and heavy armored vehicle systems in the military; my Soldiers and I spent countless hours rehearsing tactics and practicing with our weapons. Before deployment we fired about 1 million bullets downrange. On our 5th day in Iraq — mission day 1 — we got the call; someone found something dangerous, and we needed to assess the situation. We didn’t have time to plan and only 2 Soldiers could go. I had to deploy 2 of my 11 Soldiers to the security gate to be picked up by a squad they never worked with, who were taking them to the target site in the middle of Baghdad … we trained for every

Corporate Duties: Loyalty & Care

Directors of a corporation owe a fiduciary duty of loyalty and care to the shareholders of their corporation regarding business decisions. Directors shall duly deliberate all matters before the board and a directors’ actions shall be the result of reasonable investigation, due consideration, and shall be made in good faith. The standard of care for a corporate director is that directors must use such care and diligence and give such time and attention as an ordinarily careful and prudent person would reasonably be expected to exercise on behalf of the corporation under similar circumstances. When the actions of a corporate director are in question, he can usually rely on the protection of the business judgement rule (BJR). BJR is a standard for judicial review of a director’s decisions. To maintain the protection of the BJR, the director’s actions must be determined to be within the boundaries that the duty of loyalty and care requires from a corporate director.

Soldier to Realtor

From U.S. Army First Sergeant into a new evolution; seeking to rise as a leader in business, demonstrating proficiency in real estate law and as taxation expert; and a new kind of teammate on a new kind of team. Having led and created the leadership capacity to continue leading high risk operations worldwide using the “first 100 days” concept; this adaptation of a leader’s chief concern in any new operation “The First 100 Days” captures my discussable experiences and conveys what I can explain or analogize into learning opportunities, at worst laughable opportunities. You only get one “first 100 days”.
