Bio

Richard Ruhling, MD, MPH

I studied medicine at Loma Linda University, a community featured on the National Geographic cover story on Longevity as the only ‘Blue Zone’ for health in North America (Nov, 2005)

National Institutes of Health gave my school $40 million to learn why the community lives ~7 years longer than other nonsmokers.

After a Cardiology Fellowship and becoming board-certified in Internal Medicine, I returned to Loma Linda University to teach Health Science. I did Executive Health and was responsible for treadmill stress testing them.

While attending an American College of Cardiology Convention, I heard Nathan Pritikin tell how his diet and exercise program helped 85% of people off their blood pressure and diabetic drugs while reversing heart disease. This later was the basis of the US News cover story on How to Reverse Heart Disease in 1990, featuring Dean Ornish, a California cardiologist copying Pritikin.

I went to NYC and had a 65-year old executive who had three cardiologists who felt he was too risky for by-pass surgery and he was taking 12 pills a day and getting worse--he couldn’t walk two blocks without severe chest pain. One of his cardiologists said if he quit his medicine, he would die, but he lived another 30 yrs. a star witness that healthy habits beat medical care. Obituary

His extra 30 yrs is the advantage that Dr. Lester Breslow found for people who have 7 healthy habits compared to people that break them. We remember them by NEW START (see graphic)

A Blue Cross manager brought his wife to my series and said it’s the best he had seen in wellness that he works so much with. The healthcare costs broke General Motors and are breaking many companies today. I have a guarantee for cost-containment that I discuss with decision-makers for any company wanting to save huge costs--so what have you got to lose? Please call me!

How You Can Be Your Own Doctor and to Add 10 Years to Life with Healthy Habits (UCLA study)

We can add years to life and life to years with healthy habits. The key is wise eating to reverse most chronic diseases (US Senate Select Committee). Pritikin also reported this with 85% of patients off drugs for diabetes and blood pressure. Dr. Dean Ornish was featured in the cover story of US News for How to Reverse Heart Disease, also from Pritikin, etc.
Most people eat as they please, and faced with symptoms, they “ask the doctor” and get a prescription. But Adverse Drug Reactions make medical care a leading cause of illness, disability, death and the high cost of healthcare, accounting for $3.5 trillion—more than all other nations, for our poor eating habits.
Here’s how to reverse most diseases and live well, says Dr. Ruhling, who is 78 and only took one Rx in the past 65 years. He taught Health Science at Loma Linda University—his school was gifted $40 million by NIH to learn why the community lived 7 years longer than other non-smoking groups. The Key to Cost Containment and Wellness

Smoking, Drinking, Obesity, Popular Beverages and Prescription Drugs are at the basis for health problems and high cost of medical care. Dr. Ruhling participated in a 5-Day Plan to Stop Smoking at the University of Arizona that had more than 100 quit--more than 2/3 of those attending. How to Eat More and Weigh Less helps most people--over half our population is overweight. Medical care comes at a high cost because the relief of symptoms with drugs today brings more symptoms tomorrow

  • Your presentation to the insurance Study Committee of the City of Chattanooga was timely. This committee, appointed by the mayor was given the task several months ago to study ways and means to curb inflationary cost of their health care progrma. During our study many subjects about health care have been explored. The remarks you made and your slide presentation proved to me that the most cost effective means of cost containment for Employer Health Programs begins with "Preventive Medicine". Your program is the "best" I have seen in the wellness area that I work so much with. I would encourage any Employer/Employee group to listen, observe and heed what you have to show, to curb medical costs and have a longer, healthier life.
