Ray Lucia Sr. is an American retired Certified Financial Planner, author, and media personality best known for originating the Buckets of Money® retirement strategy, a time-segmented framework for managing income over long retirements. During a financial services career spanning more than three decades, he served as President and CEO of Raymond J. Lucia Companies, Inc., becoming a nationally recognized voice on retirement planning, investor behavior, and sustainable withdrawal strategies.
Ray was born on April 3, 1950, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and moved with his family to Poway, California, at the age of ten. Raised in San Diego County, he developed a strong work ethic and competitive drive through both academics and athletics. He emerged as a talented quarterback, playing football at Palomar Junior College before earning a scholarship to Western Illinois University.
After returning to California, Ray attended San Diego State University, but a serious knee injury, followed by another injury at Cal Western, brought his football career to an end. He redirected his focus toward education and earned a bachelor’s degree in Education from United States International University. He began his professional life as a high school teacher and coach, roles that sharpened his ability to explain complex ideas clearly.
With a growing family and an entrepreneurial mindset, Ray became increasingly interested in economics and investing. He left teaching to enter the financial services industry and founded Raymond J. Lucia Companies, Inc. and RJL Enterprises, Inc. His advisory practice emphasized investor education, disciplined planning, and retirement income strategies designed to address longevity and market uncertainty.
Under Ray’s leadership, the firm experienced rapid growth, reaching roughly $1 billion in assets under advisement in about 7 years. His influence within the industry earned formal recognition in 2004 when Registered Rep. magazine named him an Outstanding Broker Award recipient. In 2008, he was further honored as one of the Top 100 Independent Financial Advisors in America.
Ray’s Buckets of Money® strategy became his most enduring contribution to retirement planning. The approach divides portfolios into short-, intermediate-, and long-term segments aligned with different spending horizons. By drawing income from lower-risk assets first and allowing growth assets more time to recover, the strategy seeks to reduce early-retirement risk and improve long-term income stability.
In 1991, Ray Lucia Sr. launched The Ray Lucia Show, combining financial education with classic rock, live audience interaction, and a live band. The program later achieved national radio and television syndication, and Ray became a frequent guest on major networks. He authored several bestselling books and retired from daily broadcasting in 2019, remaining active in writing, music, and family life in San Diego.
