About Pablo Moulden

As of the past over 10 years, Pablo has been a dedicated and passionate sexual health advocate, peer educator, and public speaker as someone living with HIV since 2009.

He has experience in having lived with HIV for thirteen years, worked as a public health professional in HIV prevention and education for over a year, almost a decade of volunteer work in sexual health peer education, and years of public sex-ed policy reform advocacy locally and statewide in Virginia as well as federally. Having reached 6,000 people over 150 presentations, his professional and lived experience informs all of his talks and community outreach to better inspire and educate his peers and the broader public.

Pablo's Work & Background

Pablo Moulden was diagnosed with HIV at age 17 in 2009 while attending high school. Years later, he publicly disclosed his HIV-positive status and subsequently became a health advocate, peer educator, and public speaker on sexual health, healthy relationships, and HIV prevention.

Pablo is now 30 years old and has reached approximately 6,000 students, faculty, social workers, and activists around the country. He volunteered on the Northern Virginia AIDS Ministry's speakers' bureau for a year. At George Washington University (GWU), Pablo served on the opening plenary session panel of GWU's HIV Summit 2017 and on panels for Dr. Charles Samenow's human sexuality classes (invited seven times). He has been serving as the Director and a Co-Founder at the Virginia Coalition for Sex Ed Reform (VACSER) for over three years. He worked at NovaSalud Inc (LGBTQ+ and Latinx specialized HIV prevention nonprofit) as the Youth Program Coordinator and a Health Educator for over a year. He served on the community advisory boards of DC Center for AIDS Research and Whitman-Walker Health. He currently serves on the Alexandria Commission on HIV/AIDS and the Virginia Consumer Advisory Committee of the Virginia Department of Health.

Other involvements include having volunteered at La Clinica del Pueblo's LGBTQ+ youth center Empoderate. He has lead two teams for the DC Walk & 5K To End HIV that collectively raised $1,931 with over 23 team participants. "The Fight for REAL Sex Ed" - Presentation, Arlington Young Democrats

In June of 2021, I presented "The Fight for REAL Sex Ed: Taking Action in Your Community" to an intimate group of leaders and members from the Health & Education Caucus (HEC) of the Arlington Young Democrats (Virginia).

The presentation covered a brief history of Virginia's sex education and what has been done so far. It then covered how HEC approached the issue of inadequate sex ed locally in Arlington using Advocates for Youth's "Youth Activist Toolkit". This was followed by opportunities to get involved in sex ed reform locally and statewide. The presentation closed with a group discussion on how to apply this stratagem to other local issues.

"Patient & Community Perspectives" Panel, George Washington University HIV Summit 2019

Panelist, "Patient & Community Perspectives", GWU HIV Summit: "How Clinicians Can Create an AIDS-Free: Doctors Prescriptions for State & Local HIV/AIDS Action Plans", George Washington University, November, 2017

"Reforming Virginia's Sex Ed" Co-Presentation, Sex Education Policy Action Council

"Reforming Virginia's Sex Ed: A Work in Progress Towards Better " was a co-presentation I did as Founder and Director of the Virginia Coalition for Sex Ed Reform (VACSER) with Graham Weinschenk, our Co-Founder and Core Team Leader.

We presented the history of Family Life Education (sex ed) in Virginia and the movement to reform it that started in 2016 with the Virginia Young Democrats. We also shared how VACSER was later founded and wrote our new Bill the Virginia Healthy Youth Act. We broke down the need and means to reframe the narrative around sex education and how our fellow states can use these lessons for their respective sex ed reform movements.

VACSER was presenting as a member of SIECUS' Sex Education Policy Action Council.

"World AIDS Day: The Faces Behind HIV" Presentation (NovaSalud Inc. 2018)

I served as the volunteer Presenter in NovaSalud's 2018 Presentation to Yorktown High School in Arlington Public Schools (Virginia) entitled "Worlds AIDS Day: The Faces Behind HIV" where 23 students were in attendance.

We discussed the history of World AIDS Day, it's importance, a recap of HIV basics and fundamentals, and how HIV and AIDS affect everyday people. This included open discussion amongst the students on HIV testing, perspectives on people with HIV, disclosure and support networks, influential figures in HIV/AIDS advocacy, and an open Q&A session. I concluded with resources on where to find HIV testing (including at NovaSalud) and other HIV prevention services information.

"Sexual Health, Relationships & HIV" Presentation, United We Dream

I was a speaker for United We Dream's 'Summer of Dreams' youth leadership development program in Washington, DC where 12 youth were in attendance.

In addition to giving testimony on my life living with HIV, I talked about and facilitated discussions on healthy relationships, the importance and impact of sex education, women's health, HIV epidemiology, mechanics and prevention, as well as the stigma and shame present in our society and how we can fight it.

"Love & Sex! - What's the tea?" Presentation, HIV Support Group

Presenter & Facilitator, "Love & Sex! - What's the tea? | Part 1: The Fundamentals Plus"

In this virtual presentation to a support group of 10 for people with HIV, I presented on women's reproductive health through creative activities, STIs 101, instructed and demonstrated the use of condoms and dental dams, and finally my colleague presented on the history and use of poppers in the LGBTQ+ community. We finished with an open discussion where we asked what people's sex-ed experiences were like in school and/or at home, what they did and didn't like about it, and what they wish it would have included.

"Out On Campus" Panel, Madison Equality, James Madison University

In October of 2010, I spoke as a panelist at James Madison University for Madison Equality's (LGBTQ+ rights student org) event "Out On Campus" on National Coming Out Day where 50 were in attendance. • I’ve observed Pablo facilitate a 45-minute session with a group of 40 students on behalf of NovaSalud, presenting healthy sex ed through his life story and successfully moderating discussion of grade school students — a task in and of itself! As someone who speaks at programming conferences myself, I know how hard it is to demand the attention of a room — especially with a group who is reluctant to engage, like grade school students when discussing sexual health. I was thoroughly impressed with Pablo’s vulnerability, honesty, willingness, and ability to the students’ questions. I found myself wishing I could have had his presentation when I was their ages!

  • Pablo is so enthusiastic, it's hard to watch him talk without having it rub off on you! He has clearly been working on sex-ed reform for a long time, and he knows a ton about the space. I've seen him share both the state-wide context of sex education in VA, and also speak about his personal experiences as someone living with HIV. This isn't just a policy issue, it affects real people and Pablo highlights that! In the last presentation he gave I noticed Pablo asking rhetorically "but why is this important?" several times, and that's awesome because I always want to understand the bigger picture, the why. The biggest pitfall I've seen other speakers make is not explaining the "why" -- but Pablo does explain it!

  • Pablo recently facilitated a discussion on “Love and Sex” to a support group for people living with HIV. My co-moderator and I were impressed with the thoroughness of Pablo's preparation and the quality of his supporting visual aids. While the breadth of topics covered was comprehensive—from women’s reproductive health to STI prevention and the use of drugs during sex—it did not lack focus, and Pablo was able to tackle these timely and highly relevant subjects in an engaging manner. Pablo's knowledge is more than evident and his command of the material and passion for these issues that garners a high level of respect among the group. Furthermore, Pablos's ability to relate to his peers makes the experience he brings to the table even more impactful. We look forward to having Pablo back to discuss more on sexual health and well being.

  • On December 1st, 2020, for World AIDS Day, we had Mr.Moulden at our weekly Sato HOSA meeting to speak to the students and advisors about his experience living with HIV for 12 years. 26 people were attending that day's meeting. In the beginning, we had some technical difficulties, but Mr. Moulden was gracious enough to stick with us and provide a helping hand. Once things started moving, and our discussion progressed, many interesting concepts regarding sexual health were brought up and talked about. Thanks to Mr. Moulden, we were able to talk about things people usually shy away from. I was thrilled that he was able to join us despite his busy schedule. Mr. Moulden was refreshingly honest, vulnerable, and educational. I wish our meeting were longer, but it was cut short due to time issues. Hopefully, there will be a next time!
