Bio

Nikki Murphy is an awarded Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Leader, speaker, poet, real estate investor, and best-selling author of Home For Hurricanes: A Memoir of Resilience in Poetry and Prose. As a first-generation college graduate from a tough neighborhood and with the experience of thriving after devastating hardship, including parental abandonment and sexual assault, Murphy possesses a deep passion for both socio-economic empowerment for underserved communities and for equipping people with the knowledge and inspiration to reach their fullest potential, in spite of life’s obstacles. Her writing, speaking, and teaching aims to foster understanding across communities and provide expertise to intentionally tackle issues that impede progress toward belonging, inclusion, and personal fulfillment.

Murphy has over a decade of experience working with Fortune 500 companies to enhance their risk management and diversity, equity & inclusion (DEI) strategies. She has developed and executed strategies to support DEI engagement and the retention, development, and advancement of diverse professionals. This work has included developing educational programs to raise DEI awareness, managing employee resource group (ERG) programs, performing DEI reporting and analytics, and creating professional development programs and other impactful initiatives to support diverse professionals.

Murphy contributes to her community through several mentorship programs, community service initiatives, and as part of her strategy in Rebirth Creations LLC, a real estate investment company she co-owns with her husband. Together, they invest in underserved communities by rehabilitating properties to provide beautiful, affordable housing to low-income families.

Murphy has been named a 2019 Diversity Leader by Profiles for Diversity Journal, one of Face2Face Africa’s 30 Black Stars Business and Professional Achievers, and has been awarded a Certificate of Congressional Recognition. She has been a featured speaker at numerous conferences and events, on topics ranging from diversity, equity & inclusion to self-empowerment. Murphy holds a B.S. in Finance from New York University’s Stern School of Business and is a member of Women of Integrity Inc., an organization that empowers women and girls. She and her husband live on Long Island, New York with their 5-year-old son.

LIFE ON PURPOSE: Design a Life and Career You Love Now

For many, life just sort of happens. We end up in a career that has long ago lost its appeal, we are burdened with commitments and responsibilities, and if we have the energy (minus the guilt), we occasionally squeeze in something we enjoy. We disregard the longing for more purpose and fulfillment, deferring pursuit until someday when the circumstances are more ideal. What if we decided to pay attention to that longing, to take control of our lives and careers and truly live our values? Let’s start designing a life you love today.

FORGED UNDER FIRE: Transformational Resilience in the Face of Adversity

Whether dealing with career setbacks, sexual assault, loss, or having limited resources, Murphy has found that transformational resilience is the skill necessary to thrive and not merely survive adversity. Leveraging Murphy’s life experience as detailed in her best-selling memoir-in-verse, Home For Hurricanes, Murphy shares the transformative keys that helped her overcome adversity in its many forms.

SOCIAL DISCOURSE: Art-provoked Courageous Conversation on Social Issues

Art provides a mirror for society and provokes reflection on challenging issues. This powerful session leverages poetry from Murphy's best-selling memoir-in-verse, Home For Hurricanes, to engage in courageous conversation around any of the topics addressed in the book: race, stereotypes, gender-based socialization, parenting, shame, trauma, mental health, faith. Participants will explore social issues, learn best practices for navigating these conversations, and gain understanding through peer-to-peer reflection.

BUILDING BRIDGES: Communicating Across Difference

Each person carries their own perspectives informed by their unique lived experiences. In a time when political, religious, racial and other identity tensions are resulting in dissension, leaders of today and tomorrow will need to build bridges of understanding across difference to effectively work toward a common goal. With Murphy’s strategy for communicating across difference, audiences will learn how to engage in productive conversation and avoid contentious dialogue when necessary.

DEMONSTRATE: Authentic Allyship for Social Justice

The events of 2020 - 2021 have birthed a heightened awareness around the issues of race, bias, systemic racism, and social justice. Many are seeking to support social justice in ways that feel authentic to them. Learn what authentic allyship looks like and the personal actions one can take to become an effective ally for the cause of social justice.
