Preview of Mike's Story

Mike is the middle of five children. His parents struggled financially during Mike's childhood and the family lived in homeless shelters and hotels multiple times during his upbringing. However, Mike observed his parents and learned three core values that shaped his future: faith, family, and fortitude. He enjoys spreading the message of the values of faith, family, and fortitude to audiences of all sizes.

Mike's Law Practice

Mike is an associate in O’Hagan Meyer’s Richmond and Norfolk offices. His practice includes matters involving labor and employment law and commercial litigation. Mike regularly appears in state and federal courts throughout Virginia, representing the interests of large entities, regional corporations, small businesses, non-profit organizations, entrepreneurs, and community organizations. He has experience counseling and advising clients in the realms of employee terminations, wage and hour dilemmas, non-compete agreements, workplace violence scenarios, independent contractor agreements, and worker misclassification and payroll fraud.

Mike also develops and facilitates presentations on a wide range of topics both for commercial clients and business owners as well as for attorneys and other members of the legal profession. His areas of interest include workplace harassment and discrimination, diversity and inclusion, and attorney mental health and wellness. Whether directing boardroom discussions on how to create more inclusive workplace or giving speeches on behalf of distinguished jurists, Mike uses his voice to enhance the business community.

Mike is a former adjunct professor for Hampton University and a former public-school teacher. Prior to joining the firm, he completed a judicial clerkship with the Newport News Circuit Court where he performed extensive legal research and writing for the Honorable David F. Pugh, the Honorable Timothy S. Fisher, and the Honorable Gary A. Mills. Mike also had the privilege of completing summer clerkships for two federal district court judges: The Honorable Raymond A. Jackson and the Honorable Henry E. Hudson. Mike’s extensive experience with federal and state court judges enhanced his understanding of the litigation process. Ultimately, these skills empower him to successfully advocate for clients both in and out of court.

DIVERSITY AND BIAS IN LAW FIRMS AND AMONG LAWYERS

The myth is that "diversity" is a buzz phrase to mask hiring and promotion of unqualified minorities in the workplace. The reality is far from this altogether.

This presentation runs between 45-60 minutes and delves into the numbers and the real world experiences of minorities and women with respect to law firms and private practice. We look at the current climate for diversity hiring, what the data shows us, what the law requires, and what people are actually experiencing from day-to-day. This presentation is eye-opening as it moves from the culture way framework of diversity and nails down what the problems actually are and how they can be resolved in a practical way.

Marijuana and Work

*Virginia law*
Marijuana is legal for recreational use now, but what exactly does that mean for employers? Are you still allowed to drug test employees for marijuana? Can you terminate a person for smoking marijuana before work or during the work day? There's a whirlwind of questions to be asked and not enough time to get them all answered. This presentation can be set up to run 30 to 60 minutes and will answer these and other questions that HR professionals in Virginia need to know.
