Elementary school teacher for 27 years in Modesto California.

Created chess program for children from socio-economically disadvantaged background and took students to over 200 tournaments and 14 National Chess Championships.

Retired a few years ago and spend time going back and forth between Central America and the USA.

The Challenge of Parenting in a Complex World

As a teacher and chess coach for many years I saw certain patterns develop. One of them was that a student could be very engaged in the learning process and still "failing". The reality that some children learn different ways and that "failing" can often be seen right before great "success" . The presentation is about stories from chess club students and students in my classroom who sometimes didn't get it right immediately but then did some amazing things.
