Bio

Kelley Gunter was born and raised in a small town in Southern Ohio. She graduated from a small rural school that combined grades kindergarten through 12 in the same building. She spent summers with her grandparents learning the art of true southern cooking from her grandmother, whom she affectionately called “Nonnie.”

Kelley’s love of reading was passed on to her from her grandmother and her mother, who were both avid readers. Kelley graduated from college with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a master’s degree in counseling and is a licensed social worker. Throughout high school, college, and graduate school, Kelley’s teachers and professors encouraged her to write professionally. She had written both editorial and review columns for a few local newspapers, but only pursued writing as a hobby after the birth of her son in 1994.

Following a lengthy career in social services, Kelley began writing full time. Her first book, You Have Such a Pretty Face, is a memoir detailing the emotional journey of being obese and the surprising changes brought on by her 243-pound weight loss following bariatric surgery, as well as the emotional factors that contributed to her initial weight gain. Kelley is currently in the process of writing a second memoir, The Homecoming Queen of Crazy Town.

When she is not writing, she enjoys cooking, baking, and reading. She also loves spending time with her son, her best friend, and her three Rottweilers. She makes a habit of enjoying all of the sweet magic life has to offer and thanking God regularly for blessing her with the continued gift of life.

  • Kelley did an amazing job of communicating with and reaching the entire crowd. Her touching words held the room in captivated silence, patiently waiting for the next revelation. By her conclusion there wasn’t a person in attendance who missed the weight and importance of her message. I was lucky to witness such a talented speaker so close to home.

  • When I heard that Kelley would be speaking at A Night of Hope in Ohio, I knew I had to travel from my home in Florida to be there. She had me and the rest of the audience hanging on every word, laughing at every comical passage and tearing up at every emotional one. Her story is truly a story of survival and she tells it as if public speaking was in her blood. Getting to speak to a captive audience is her true calling.

  • I was fortunate enough to hear Kelley speak at A Night of Hope a few weeks back. I went through a range of emotions while listening to her talk about some of the extremely traumatic events she experienced throughout her life. Considering the sensitivity around the content, I was impressed with Kelley's instinctual ability to incorporate humor when the atmosphere felt understandably tense. Kelley's bravery was inspiring and her desire to help others by telling her story felt heroic. I'm convinced that given a platform, Kelley's story will not only captivate the audience, but also encourage those that are in need of healing.

  • Thank you, Kelley, for doing such an excellent job presenting on such a tough subject! It was a relevant presentation that made us laugh, but also invited us into your darkest moments to feel your pain. You have an extra-ordinary story to share and will encourage many to speak up and take their lives back.
