When Community Conversations Go Wrong: Choosing Accountability over Retribution

How do we talk to others about the social issues that matter to us? Many of us have attempted these conversations with people we care about deeply -- our childhood best friend, our sibling, our parent or grandparent, and others in our close circles. Sometimes, these conversations go smoothly. More often than not, they quickly escalate into a full blown argument, with at least one person leaving the conversation feeling hurt, shame, and disconnection. Many of us are then left to wonder: what now?

In this session, Joyce Chiao takes a hard look at the mindsets we have when we approach these conversations and how our approach may or may not move us closer to justice. Joyce explores an alternative model for these conversations that can teach us lessons about interconnectedness, accountability, power, and healing -- not only for individuals who are hurt by harmful statements but also for the relationships and communities we hold dear.

Designing Liberatory Organizations

Liberatory organizations understand that their DEI efforts cannot live only within the internal workings of their organization but instead must also permeate into their impact in the world. To do so, liberatory organizations strive for cultural transformation, inside and out. This talk discusses the characteristics of liberatory organizations, the principles they embody, and concrete ways to put these principles into practice.

Embedding DEI in the Employee Lifecycle

DEI shows up throughout the entire employee lifecycle, from recruitment to retention. This talk dissects this lifecycle through the lens of DEI. In this talk, attendees are invited to follow along with each stage of the lifecycle from the perspective of the employee experience, explore inequities often embedded in the process, and identify concrete ways to transform processes using DEI-centered practices.

Initiating & Growing Your DEI Strategy

To sustain an effective DEI effort, organizations need a strategy – grounded in an understanding of where the organization currently is and needs to go. This talk provides an overview of developing a DEI strategy, from initial assessment to long-term sustainability within an organization. Along the way, this talk will dive into critical components of a DEI strategy, common pitfalls, and key considerations for activating this strategy.

Building an Effective DEI Assessment

The DEI assessment is a pivotal foundation to building an effective DEI strategy. During the DEI assessment, what organizations explore – and how they do so – is vital to identifying accurate findings that inform DEI priorities. This talk will explore the core components of a DEI assessment, including key assessment areas and approaches to center the most marginalized stakeholders in this process.

Decoding DEI through Data Insights

Data plays a key role in advancing organizational DEI strategy, from identifying inequities to gauging DEI progress to supporting organizational accountability. However, many organizations struggle to measure their DEI efforts holistically, if at all. This talk will explore the many ways that data can strengthen your DEI work and concrete strategies for using data to understand your DEI priorities, progress, and impact.
