Make your Learning Stick: Now That The Conference is Over...

Now that you’ve made it through a conference, your brain will be working hard to assimilate all the knowledge you’ve gained. Unfortunately, this assimilation process is not easy, far from perfect, and will often result in more forgetting than remembering. Luckily, there are several methods you can employ to help boost your memory for all you’ve learned. During this session, we will explore 5 concrete principles to help make your learning stick.

Ignite Your Learning: Get More from Any Conference

The human brain was simply not built to accommodate for the type of 'learning-blitz' required by most conferences. This means, to get the most bang for our buck, we may need to reconsider how we typically approach learning at conventions and conferences.
In this session, we will explore foundations of how the brain functions and, drawing upon these principles, consider the best way to tackle the conference so that you can learn, remember, and embody those concepts most relevant to you and your profession.

Good Stress vs Bad Stress: The Emotions of Learning

Sometimes it can make us laser-focused, and other times it leaves us floundering. Sometimes it can drive us to action, and other times it can freeze us in our tracks.
What is the deal with stress and why can it have so many different outcomes? During this session, we will explore this topic and differentiate between good and bad stress. Furthermore, we will explore several concrete actions we can undertake to drive or respond to stress in our own lives.
Finally, we will take a brief glimpse at the larger issue of emotions and consider what role they play in the learning process.

Is my Teenager Crazy? A Tour Through the Teenage Brain

Sometimes they’re bored, disengaged, and unmotivated. Other times they’re risky, unpredictable, and emotionally volatile. What is going on with teenagers!?
During this evening session, we will explore the brain, how it develops, and how things change during adolescence and early adult-hood. Through fun, interactive activities, we will learn how (and why) teenagers think differently than adults and consider ways we can support them academically, emotionally, and cognitively.
Yes - your teen might be crazy…but that’s totally normal!

Your Brain, Your Life: Foundations of Thinking

How does the brain work to make sense of reality, and what impact does this have on teaching & learning? During this engaging and interactive session, we will explore the often counter-intuitive foundations of thinking, the power of stories to drive perception, the role errors play in comprehension, and consider how these three concepts tie together to drive student learning. Buckle in - here's where things get real!

From Science to Strategies: Principles of Learning

Can students listen to music while they study? Are hard-copy or digital books better for learning? What’s the one key to forming deep, lasting memories?
During this session, we will explore several principles of how human beings learn. Drawn from brain, behavioural, and educational research, these principles are learning 'nuggets' that can shine a light on more traditional classroom practices. Beyond learning about each principle, we will also consider how these principles can be adapted to tweak/improve teaching & learning practices.

The Transfer Dilemma: Why 21st Century Skills Flounder

Why are skills and knowledge so difficult to move between different contexts? During this session, we will dive into the issue of transfer, consider what is required for effective transfer, and discuss what this means for the modern 21st Century Skills movement in education. Furthermore, we will explore the only truly future-proof skill research has ever found.

The Learning Trajectory: From Surface to Deep to Transfer Learning

How do human beings take in, embody, and utilize new information and ideas? In this session, we will explore this process. Using Learning Objectives as a through line, we will consider how to walk students from Shallow into Deep learning. In addition, we will take a look at Transfer and discuss why moving skills between contexts is so tricky.
