Bio

Heather Fleming is the founder and director of In Purpose Educational Services (IPES), author of the book My Black Friend Says...: Lessons in Equity, Inclusion, and Cultural Competency, and founder and director of the MO Equity Education Partnership (MoEEP). Prior to her work in organizing and equity training, she started her career working eight years in the public service sector.. She then moved into education and served as an English Language Arts teacher for 14 years before becoming a full-time equity and inclusion training and program design professional. Her goal for her work in this field is to promote healing, understanding, and equity for all.

Planting Trees

Based upon the Nelson Henderson quote, "The true meaning of life is to plant trees under whose shade you do not expect to sit," Heather explains the moral imperative we all have to create a better future for those who will come after us. Regardless of the industry, she will discuss the significance of each of our roles in building a better future for all of us.

The Urgency of Now

In today's charged political environment, it is essential for citizens to understand the issues before us and the steps that we can take to ensure the continuance of our democracy. Using easy-to-understand language and examples, Heather will explain how each individual issue is interconnected with the larger fight for democracy, as well as what concerned citizens can do to empower themselves and others.

Education For All

What does education look like when we take steps to ensure that the educational experience allows all children to thrive? Heather explores how equity education benefits ALL children regardless of their background and identity. She discusses specific techniques that individuals can use to approach education as well as why they work.

First They Came For...

Why is it important to support rights for the most marginalized members of society? Utilizing the Martin Niemoeller poem based upon his experiences during the Holocaust, Heather explains how infringing on the rights of small groups of marginalized peoples can negatively impact us all.
