Master writing teacher Hazel Denhart, Ed.D. is the creator of the powerhouse mythopoetic writing method The Universal Grammar of Story®. She has taught this peer-reviewed, field-tested writing method for decades at universities and writing groups in the US, Europe, Central Asia, and the Middle East. With an entertaining, energizing, and awe-inspiring style, Dr. Denhart shows writers how to advance their storytelling skill with shockingly effective practices drawn from the deep minds of philosophy and literature through the ages.

Dr. Denhart is a playwright, screenwriter, poet, and author of educational books. Her work in mass media earned her a US Army commendation and her screenwriting has gained recognition by the American Motion Picture Academy. In the scientific world, her seminal research on dyslexia is found in the National Center for Biotechnology Information and is widely cited by researchers, policy makers, and practitioners in multiple languages around the globe.

The Success or Failure of Your Story Depends on Your Choice of a Single Word

Thousands of years ago, Heraclitus taught that the most powerful force in the world is conflict--without which life could not exist. The very definition of a story is the setting to life of an irreversible and utterly transformative conflict. The more perfect the conflict, the more powerful the story. The conflict of any story begins with the storyteller choosing a single, perfect adjective to describe the hero. Its opposite will then become the villain. When forced together in the small space of a story these opposing energies create a nuclear fusion that, when done right, is unstoppable. In this presentation, we explore how to choose that first, critical word out of which all the other words flow.
