Bio

I'm Frankie Boyle, I'm a UK based visual artist who specialises in the language of light as my form of expression. Light enriches our lives. With light comes vision, wellbeing, and hope. My work explores how light, colour and form blend to create sensory experiences that connect the story you want to tell with the emotions of those who experience it.

Light is a language. I was diagnosed with a speech and language disorder at a young age, which led me naturally into a world of other forms of communication, developing new sensory strengths and capacities to compensate for the lack of others. Vision is my strongest sense, and without light we would not have vision. Light is my language.

I have developed my understanding of how light can support concept and storytelling over a decade of work within the arts, entertainment, and events sectors, building on many years of research into the importance of light to wellbeing, its intrinsic role in our cognitive processes, mental health, and subconscious in daily life. Through my work, I explore the intricate interactions between evolving technical discoveries, biological light and how to deploy multi-sensory elements to strength.

My fascination with light and how we connect with it has become my main drive and passion in life. Harnessing the essence of that response is the focus in my work. Through my light research, I have learnt to create artworks that allow us to stop, pause and be present with our emotions, with the understanding of how light is perceived and processed by our brains.

We are all connected by the light gifted by the sun. Our bodies have evolved over 4 billion years of evolution and this evolution has been powered by the sun. Our brains feed off this sun to keep our bodies working. Our bodies charge and engage from the bright blue sky, and we have learnt to be comforted and relax while looking into fires at the end of day. Understanding this intuitive response, we have embedded deep within our DNA that fire is associated with relaxation, protection, and security. When we feel this, we allow ourselves to dare to dream.

Only in the last 180 years have we developed artificial light ,which in turn has led us into a society that allows us to spend 90% of our time indoors and away from the natural nourishment of the Sun. Although 75% of our sentient data is via sight, only 10% of light that we receive through our bodies gets converted into vision. The majority gets to work with all our other cognitive processes. Being in artificial light is like having a multivitamin rather than a meal. Consequentially, we exist with global sleep disorders, depression and mental wellness crises.

Through my journey with light, I have continued to learn and be influenced by the dynamic effect, strength, and importance it has on our mental health and wellbeing.
