Bio

I'm passionate about helping people (individuals and teams) get out of their own way so they can shine. I'm a speaker, executive coach, Board director and consultant on internal culture change, resilience, leadership, conflict, presence, personal brand and other great stuff. I also speak on the topic of mental health, stress, resilience, autism and the need to embrace diversity.

I was a wildly successful, accidental executive who avoided real work until I was 26. After earning an impractical BA in English and Philosophy, I spent two years living on a 40-foot sailboat with five guys (I only slept with one of them, darn it). Started my career at an ad agency in Toronto, and quit everything at 32 to move to the Prairies and be an earth mother. After six months of screaming babies, I hurtled back into the workforce, became an executive at 37 and ran everything from marketing communication to business strategy and enterprise risk. Having never wanted to be a boss, I decided I'd learn how to be kick-ass at it. When my employee engagement scores were 20% higher than the rest of the company, the CEO took notice and I helped him and a peer shift the organization from one of command-and-control to one where employees actively gave constructive feedback up, down and sideways. We landed on Canada's Top 50 Employers list, climbing to #5.

That experience informs much of what I do. Lots of leaders talk about trust, constructive conflict and accountability, but fail to understand that actions speak louder than words. Employees have fantastic radar about who's an authentic leader and who isn't, who has their back and who doesn't, and who has the guts to give them difficult feedback that will help them grow.

I'm a huge fan of Brené Brown's work on courage and vulnerability, and am both a Certified Daring Way Facilitator (weaving her work into speeches, coaching and consulting) and a Dare To Lead Master Facilitator (corporate clients). Other certifications include PCC (Professional Certified Coach) through the International Coach Federation, Institute Certified Board Director (ICD.D), emotional intelligence (EQi 2.0), and Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI).

In 2007, I was named one of Canada's 100 Most Powerful Women; in 2012, one of Canada's 25 Women of Influence; in 2014, I was named Humanitarian of the Year by the Canadian Red Cross (SK) for my voluntarism in the area of autism and Dress for Success, in 2018, one of the WISE 50 over 50 award recipients for those who start successful businesses after age 50.

Daring to Be Yourself at Work

Being authentic at work is ‘in’ these days. But many of us worry: “If I let the real me out, I might share too much, overwhelm others or tick someone off.” So, we go to work each day and do the best we can, without offering ideas about how to improve things, sharing what’s really going on for us, or reaching out to colleagues for connection. This relegates our real self to watching from the sidelines and ironically, reduces our resilience and ability to handle change. It doesn’t have to be that way. Studies have shown that employees who bring their whole self to work, and have strong collegial connections experience less stress, more resilience and productivity, and a more positive outlook on life.

In this session, learn the success factors required to be authentic at work and boost your energy, productivity and positivity, based on the research of Dr. Brené Brown, one of the world’s leading experts on courage, vulnerability and resilience.

CHANGE THE SYSTEM FROM WITHIN - An employee's guide to making a difference

Many employees are tired of change and bored with morale-boosting speeches. Yet highly engaged employees give their best, stay with companies longer and serve as great ambassadors. They also feel much better about their lives - both personally and professionally. If you want to inspire employees to get in the game and quit being cynical about the difference they can make, this keynote is for you. Garrett is real and shares practical ideas about how employees can quit fighting change, get with the program, gain influence with bosses and have more fun at work.

An Accidental Executive - How a Free Spirit Became a Powerhouse
1 hour
(View workshop agenda)

This speech shares how to apply life lessons to enhance your success. It outlines Garrett's journey from a happy-go-lucky young woman whose only aspiration was hedonistic happiness to an award-winning, laser-focused powerhouse. By turns funny, wrenching and inspiring, Garrett discusses how she learned to navigate the corporate boardroom as an executive while raising two boys (one of whom has autism), weathering divorce, joint custody and remarriage, and learning how to manage her exuberance and strong presence so that she could increase her influence and make a difference. She shares her thoughts on finding your niche by leveraging your strengths, managing your flaws and making it in the corporate world ... while staying true to yourself.

FIND YOUR SWEET SPOT - NEEDS, WANTS & TALENTS
1 hour
(View workshop agenda)

The average person isn’t too happy with their career. Most blame their boredom or stress on external factors – their boss, colleagues, the company or lack of opportunities elsewhere. Getting clear on your needs, wants and talents is the first step towards aligning what you’re good at with your aspirations. Garrett shares funny and insightful stories to walk the audience through a model to help them coach themselves to higher performance that makes them happier.

CULTURE CHANGE
1 hour
(View workshop agenda)

The most difficult concept for most leaders is that culture is not an ‘add-on’ responsibility. It is ‘how’ people do the ‘what’. In other words, one doesn’t set time aside to ‘do’ culture. It is lived and breathed every day. How we compliment others (or don’t), coach them on a performance issue, invite or don’t invite input, handle problems – all of these how’s define the culture. A common refrain is that “We don’t have time to add culture to our work; we’re already over-burdened.” This is the crux of the issue. Without seeing that how you do your work now IS the culture, it is tough to deliberately shift the culture to a different and more desirable state. It is hard for a fish to see the water it is swimming in.

Getting real about leadership - at work and in life
1 hour
(View workshop agenda)

Leadership – what is it and why is it talked about so much, yet so elusive? The concept of leadership is often confined to senior people who run organizations and manage people. Yet leadership exists in every culture and every avenue of life – and sadly, it’s also absent. This presentation shares information about personal and professional leadership, as well as how to grow it in oneself and foster it in others.

LIFE BALANCE - Figuring out the magic formula
1 hour
(View workshop agenda)

Why do we use the term ‘work-life balance’? Work is a major part of life: if viewed as a chore to endure before getting back to living, you’re in trouble. Why not call it ‘life balance’? Different life phases demand different time investments, such as having children, kick-starting a career or caring for aging parents. There is no right or wrong. Figure out the balance that’s right for you by defining your needs, wants and talents, and living the life of your dreams.
