Bio

Bio #1

I am extremely passionate about helping people achieve optimal physical fitness with strength training, which will also lead people to have better mental health. I have been involved in all areas of the fitness, nutrition and nutritional supplement industry for 36 years. I have also formulated patented nutritional supplements. My areas of study were in physiology, nutrition and epigenetics.

In 2008, I was diagnosed with bipolar 2 disorder. Since then, I have experienced and deeply studied all facets of this disorder. I have experienced the extreme highs and lows of this disorder and have learned how to deal with the depressive side of this disorder better, with my 36 years of experience in physical training and nutrition.

Even though mental health conditions be cured, I use my expertise to show people how important and effective proper nutrition and training can be to help ease some of the depression that can be quite frequent with this disorder also helping people to not gain so much weight with medication side effects that treat this disorder.

I have spoken at the largest trade shows for nutrition, nutritional supplements and outpatient therapy clinics for mental health issues.

I enjoy natural bodybuilding as a lifestyle, and I am the Founder of betterthanzero.net and Betterthanzero Fitness. I have lived in Columbus, Ohio all of my life. I also enjoy going to baseball and hockey games. Go Columbus Blue Jackets, Columbus Clippers and last but definitely not least, The Ohio State Buckeyes!!!

Along my speaking journeys regarding mental health, I have been challenged many times by people that tell me that if people were right with God, they would not have mental health issues. This not only is so far from the truth it is harmful for people that face mental health struggles.

I have now made it a new passion for people to understand some of the complexities and misconceptions with religion and mental health mixing together. I have spoken in churches about what happens when mental health and religion collide. My goal is to show people the best way for people with deep religious beliefs about mental health, and people with serious mental health struggles, how to co-exist and help each other.

I also show people of faith how to better understand and help people with mental health struggles, without invoking their religious beliefs, assuming that this is the best and only way to help people with mental health struggles.

I show by examples and my experience how people with mental health issues can “come to or get right with God” AFTER receiving the proper help and treatment from qualified mental health professionals. Going to church, praying, and receiving counseling for mental health struggles from a pastor as a first step to help people with mental health struggles is almost always NOT effective and potentially very harmful.

RETIRED, BUT STILL WRITING BOOKS

Experience with Dushawn (Duey) Hadinger:

Duey, (that is what I call him) is one of my best learning sponges and teachers.

As a former professor and head of biology and medical departments, I am still amazed on how much Duey has taught me about ingredients, formulations and the physiology of how nutritional strategies, supplements and specific exercise regimens work in the body and brain.

Duey and I are currently working on a scientific research paper that will be published in a medical journal, on how Atherosclerosis and epigenetic factors contribute to prostate cancer.

Duey gave me the epigenetic angle on this, and I incorporated that heavily in our paper. Duey and I enjoy coffee 3 times a week, and I consider him a great friend.

Duey is extremely intelligent and passionate about getting people life changing and lasting results.

You can be assured that his knowledge of nutrition, nutritional supplementation and physical training is second to none.

I have also never seen anyone so disciplined and accountable for his own physical health, even with the struggles with bipolar 2 disorder and major depressive disorder issues that have affected him over the last 18 years.

Nutrition and strength training for overall physical and mental health

Adding lean muscle through strength training not only enhances physical fitness but also has positive effects on mental health. It can boost confidence, reduce stress, and improve overall mood.

Strength training and proper nutrition also play a vital role in boosting metabolism, increasing bone density (especially in women), improving overall strength, and enhancing physical performance. Strength training also contributes to better posture and balance, reducing the risk of injuries.

Adding lean muscle with strength training can also help regulate blood sugar levels, lower the risk of chronic diseases, and improve cardiovascular health. It also promotes better sleep and mental well-being.

When religion and mental health collide

Some religions and religious denominations believe that a closer relationship with God will solve or cure mental health issues. Nothing could be further from the truth!

Bipolar disorder and the depression beast

The real truth of how depression affects people with mental health issues. Breaking the misconceptions and stereotypes that many have given to people that battle bipolar depression.
