Bio

Derek Osborn, CPS, CPM is a native of Tuscaloosa, Alabama who earned his B.S. in Criminal Justice with a concentration in Law and the Courts from the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga. He is a former Court Referral Officer for the State of Alabama and was a trainer of new CRO’s for the Administrative Office of Courts in Montgomery. Derek served as the Executive Director of the Parents Resource Institute for Drug Education (PRIDE) from 2013-2020 and turned a small, one-person prevention organization into a team of eight prevention specialists, multiple interns and hundreds of volunteers. Derek is a Certified Prevention Manager and Specialist through the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium. He has been a featured presenter regarding drug trends and the dark net at multiple conferences throughout the Southeast as well as on the national circuit including the CADCA Mid-Year Institute.

Derek currently works as a keynote and workshop presenter at various conferences across the United States and serves as a consultant for non-profit and drug prevention organizations. He is a West Alabama Leadership Award Winner of 2017, graduate of Leadership Tuscaloosa class of 2009, a member of the Druid City Business League and the Non-Profit Policy Council, an instructor at the Alabama School for Alcohol and Drug Studies and serves on multiple advisory and planning committees for the State of Alabama. Under his leadership, PRIDE was awarded Non-Profit of the Year in 2019 by the West Alabama Chamber of Commerce.

Drug Trends and Expectations for the Future

This interactive lecture session offers a comprehensive review of current drug trends and a realistic forecast as to where our country is headed in terms of use, policy and abuse. It will cover current drug trends, potency, availability and discussion on the societal and cultural acceptance that will impact our children for generations to come. (1-2 hrs)

Current Drug Trends, the Cartels, and the Dark Net Continuum

Course Description:
Drug culture constantly evolves and changes through time while various factions remain constant. This course offers a
comprehensive review of updated drug trends including new substances, potency and availability, the role of the cartels, and
the seemingly inextinguishable force that is the “Dark Net.”
Course Objectives:
After attending the course, a participant will be able to:
• demonstrate knowledge of current drugs and their availability;
• identify chemicals involved as well as common side effects;
• become aware and obtain a general understanding of how the dark net operates;
• examine societal acceptance vs. corporate acceptance of drugs and realistic expectations for the future; and
• become more motivated to continue and strive harder with prevention efforts. (2-6 hrs)
