David Hastings Eckerd College Professor

David Hastings is a marine geochemist and chemical oceanographer who began teaching marine science, environmental science, and chemistry at Eckerd College in Tampa Bay in 2000. His academic journey started with a chemistry degree from Princeton University and a Ph.D. in chemical oceanography from the University of Washington. Hastings' research primarily focuses on paleoclimatology, studying past climate changes through ocean sediments. He has also investigated the effects of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill on ocean sediments and microplastics in the marine environment.

Hastings strongly advocates for scientists engaging in public policy discussions and emphasizes the importance of taking action in Florida to address environmental challenges. He is dedicated to finding solutions while communicating the scientific urgency of protecting our planet's future. After retiring from teaching at Eckerd College, a small liberal arts institution in St. Petersburg, FL, Hastings enjoys singing, hiking, swimming, canoeing, and kayaking and has a passion for homemade lemon sorbet.
