Evidence-Based Education: How to Improve Your Teaching Based on the Science of Learning

Are you looking for ways to improve your teaching? Are you tasked with teaching students, technicians, interns, residents, or colleagues but have never received any formal training in how to teach? Are you interested in learning about the evidence that is available to help improve your teaching? If you answered "yes" to any of the above questions, this workshop is for you. You will learn about some of the most important and relevant research that gives us insight into how we learn. Most importantly, you will leave the workshop with ideas and a plan for how you can use this information in your teaching immediately. We will discuss ways to improve teaching in a clinical situation, as well as how to improve your teaching in a more traditional or classroo setting. We will focus on: 1) working memory & long-term memory; 2) retrieval practice; 3) active learning; and 4) instructional strategies. I addition, you will learn about common education myths and why you should forget about them.

Optimizing Rounds for Effective Clinical Teaching

Clinical teaching often revolves around case discussions. It can be challenging during a busy day to ensure teaching is a priority while still providing excellent and efficient patient care. This workshop revolves around evidence-based techniques for rounding strategies that you can use in your clinic or hospital right away. There will be opportunities for practice so that you can think about how (and which) techniques will work best in your unique setting.
