Bio

Ben Webb is an award-winning Project Manager, Project Director, and event delivery specialist with more than 30 years’ experience leading complex projects across infrastructure, major events, tourism, transport, and the built environment.

Recognised as Australia’s Leading Project Manager (AIPM, 2022), Ben is known for delivering high-stakes projects under intense public, political, and commercial pressure—where failure is visible and success is non-negotiable. His career spans large-scale infrastructure, iconic public events, and nationally significant programs involving government, private enterprise, community stakeholders, and global brands.

Ben’s expertise sits at the intersection of strategy, delivery, risk, and leadership. He speaks candidly about why projects really fail—not because of tools or templates, but because of decision-making, governance, human behaviour, and misplaced incentives. His work challenges traditional project management orthodoxy, advocating for pragmatic, accountable, and outcome-driven delivery over bureaucracy and box-ticking.

Why Projects Fail (And Why are you the last to know)

Despite better tools, frameworks, and certifications than ever before, projects continue to fail at an alarming rate. Cost overruns, schedule blowouts, scope creep, burnout, and quiet “managed failure” have become normalised across industries.

This presentation goes beyond process and methodology to examine the real causes of project failure: poor decision-making under pressure, misaligned incentives, weak governance, false certainty in reporting, and a culture that rewards optimism over honesty.

Drawing on three decades of experience delivering high-risk infrastructure and major event projects, Ben Webb explains why dashboards often hide problems instead of surfacing them, how early warning signs are routinely ignored, and why many failures are obvious long before they appear in formal reports.

Audiences leave with a clearer understanding of:

Why projects fail even when “best practice” is followed

How governance and reporting structures create blind spots

The human behaviours th

When Reporting Lies: The Dangerous Illusion of Control in Project Management

Most project failures don’t come as a surprise — they come after months of reassuring reports that said everything was “on track.”

This presentation exposes how traditional project reporting creates a false sense of certainty, masking risk, delaying intervention, and rewarding optimism over truth. Status dashboards, traffic lights, and milestone charts often tell leaders what they want to hear rather than what they need to know.

Drawing on real-world delivery experience, Ben Webb unpacks how reporting structures become performative, how bad news is softened or delayed, and why governance frameworks often fail precisely when pressure increases.

Audiences will learn:

Why status reporting routinely hides emerging failure

How incentives and power dynamics distort the truth

The warning signs leaders miss until it’s too late

Practical ways to redesign reporting to surface risk early

This session is essential for executives and boards who rely on reports to make decisions — and want t

Leadership Under Pressure: Making Decisions When There Is No Good Option

The most consequential project decisions are rarely made in calm conditions. They’re made under time pressure, incomplete information, political scrutiny, and competing interests — when there is no perfect answer.

This presentation focuses on leadership at the point where frameworks stop working. Ben Webb explores how experienced leaders navigate uncertainty, trade-offs, and accountability when decisions cannot be deferred and failure is visible.

Through real examples from complex projects and major events, this session examines how leaders avoid paralysis, resist false certainty, and maintain credibility when outcomes are uncertain.

Audiences will take away:

How to make decisions with incomplete and conflicting information

Why deferring decisions often creates greater risk than acting

The leadership behaviours that build trust under pressure

How to remain accountable when outcomes are unpredictable

This is a practical, grounded session for senior leaders, project directors, an
