Designing Experience: Architecture in the Age of Social Media

Social media is changing the way we experience the built environment. In both the virtual and the physical, the goal is the same: engagement. Changes in contemporary consumer culture and social media are creating a global value system where experiences are viewed as more desirable than possessions. Within this context, the value of design is now greater than ever. So, how does the future of architectural design respond to this paradigm shift? By leveraging bespoke design as an opportunity to challenge convention, architecture has the ability to provide memorable one-of-a-kind urban experiences that have a social, cultural, and technological impact. In my talk, I will share the exploratory practice of my firm Synthesis Design + Architecture, an award-winning design research practice and that leverages technology (3D printing, digital fabrication, parametric modeling, big data, etc) as a means to challenge convention and imagine alternatives through an idea-driven architecture.

The Future of Design as a Destination

In the era of millennials and social media - experiences are more desirable than possessions, “creative” is a noun, and “influencer” is a job. In this context, the value of design is now greater than ever - in particular to the luxury travel market. Immersive, authentic experiences have been the talk of the luxury travel industry for some time now, but how does the future of design respond to this paradigm shift?

In this session, entitled “The Future of Design as a Destination”, award-winning Los Angeles based architect Alvin Huang, AIA will discuss insights gained from over a decade of experience leading the design of novel hospitality, retail, and lifestyle projects in the Asian region. He will discuss how changes within contemporary consumer culture, the emergence of social media, the integration of nature, and an appreciation of “digital craft” can inform thoughtful and unique designs that are inspired by local cultures.

Technology, Technique, Techné: Creation vs Contingency

It can be said that the catalyst for every major advancement within the discipline of Architecture has been a parallel advancement of technology. Recently the introduction of computation within the field of Architecture has enabled new generative design techniques, new digital fabrication processes, and new performative building technologies. However, technology must also be understood as a form of contemporary cultural production that is not the end (solution), but rather the means (provocation). In this talk, Alvin Huang, AIA shares the exploratory practice of his firm Synthesis Design + Architecture, an award-winning design research practice and that leverages technology as a means to challenge convention and imagine alternatives through an idea-driven architecture where form follows performance.

  • Alvin gave a keynote address at 2016 Now Next Future conference, where he showed how he uses technology to enable his design creations. I personally was impressed at the breadth of work he shared and how he was able to achieve such creative outcomes. He also infused humor into his talk, which is always a plus for me. Alvin is well versed in many topics, design, practice, technology, and creativity. He can speak confidently and dynamically to an audience of young to seasoned professionals.

  • Alvin Huang, AIA was selected to be an "emerging professional" speaker in 2015 at the renown Monterey Design Conference hosted by AIA California. This event brings in internationally acclaimed architects for a weekend of inspiration. Alongside these headliners the event committee selects up and coming architects who are making a name for themselves. Alvin was one of four emerging professionals selected in 2015 for this honor. Alvin's lecture was polished, informational and impactful. His presentation was named by event participants as a favorite and scored highly on our post-event survey. The following year he was invited to lecture at another AIA California event - the Now Next Future conference focused on technology where he was again named a favorite speaker by participants. He's prepared, polished and insightful.

  • Alvin was invited to present to the University of Kentucky College of Design, School of Architecture in October of 2018. His presentation titled "Technology, Technique, & Techné: Creation vs. Contingency" created a buzz among our students. The clarity with which he spoke and the ease of his delivery was engaging and relaxed and encouraged students to ask questions at the end and to continue to discusss the lecture in studios days after the event. Students could see in the work a trajectory of experimentation and investigation that leads to exceptional outcomes, reinforcing the skills and tools they are learning in the studio and providing an example to follow. The integration of digital tools, integrated thinking, digital analysis and collaboration with other talented consultants also presented a view into contemporary practice that students can see as a model for their future. Beyond the impact on students, his presentation would benefit many offices as an example of a contemporary practice that seamlessly fuses technology and practice in ways that advance the profession to tackle complex problems.

  • Alvin Huang presented the keynote address at a series of ‘Paradigm Shift’ events in New Zealand. Over the course of a week, Alvin delivered his keynote address in five cities, to exclusive audiences. The audience for these events were New Zealand’s leading architects, architectural designers, interior designers and constructors. Alvin’s energy and professionalism were unwavering, and the presentation ‘Mastering the Thinking Behind Technology’ was innovative, creative and challenged the audience to think about how the industry can better use technology in the design process. Alvin’s presentation was delivered in a timely, well-structured format and provided exciting insights into an area of architecture that was new to much of New Zealand’s architecture and design community. Alvin’s presentation was an inspiration to all who attended the events and we would highly recommend Alvin as a presenter, inspirer and innovator.

  • Alvin was one of our speakers during the ILTM Asia Pacific 2018 Opening Forum, where he illuminated “The Future of Design as a Destination”. Putting the emphasis on why design is going to shape the future of travel through the sophistication of technology, Alvin was able to adapt his architectural knowledge to our leading luxury travel audience. Both our team and attendees were impressed with his talk, which combined stunning visuals, industry expertise and a touch of humour. Alvin is ultimately an inspirational speaker that we would highly recommend.

  • Alvin Huang was invited to be a speaker at our event in Bangalore, titled 'Mosaic of Episodes' co-hosted by the IIA(Karnataka) and 'Huddle'. He presented his work to a large audience of leading professionals , several industry experts and students. This was in many ways a unique experience for the fraternity - to have a practitioner who has been recognised world over for being able to stay consistently experimental in his academic and professional pursuits. His presentation was a visual treat, with a range of projects across typologies and scales, as he spoke of equations with his readings of Design philosopy and Architectural theory. Alvin's lecture was at the centre of several interesting conversations during the Q&A session and post-event. We look forward to having him back again in the near future
