Bio

I am Professor and Dean of the School of Computer Science and Information Technology at Adelaide University, Australia. My research interests include the design and deployment of technology to increase the understanding and improve digital learning experiences. More specifically, my work examines the areas of learning analytics, personalized active learning, and technology for student support.

How do we learn, anyway?

The wealth of data currently captured about how students learn still appears disconnected from effective student support actions. In this talk I explore how the use of data can be more effective when taking into account psychological aspects of learning and tackle directly the needs of the students.

Bridging the Middle Space with Learning Analytics

The area of Learning Analytics is described as a bricolage of disciplines including technology, psychology, pedagogy, etc. In this talk I describe various projects and initiatives to try to bridge this spaces and increase our level of understanding and improvement of learning experience.

The role of institutional data in Learning Analytics

The wealth of data collected by educational institutions places them in an unprecedented position to gain deeper insights into various aspects their day-to-day operations. However, capitalizing this value is proving a challenge due to the need for multidisciplinary teams, a clear vision from management teams, and effective initiatives to promote the uptake of a data-informed culture. This talk provided a vision of this landscape as well as some initiatives to promote the cultural change towards the use of data in educational institutions.
