Bio

In addition to serving my community as a pharmacist, I am also a clinical educator, published author and professional speaker. I have presented hundreds of live courses, nationally and internationally, in the areas of medication therapy, professional healthcare practice and licit and illicit substance abuse.

The challenge faced by all healthcare professionals today is the safe and effective management of medically complex patients and substance abusing patients. My sellout programs provide an overview of the most common systemic diseases, the most frequently prescribed medications and the most commonly abused drugs and substances. Each of my programs focuses on the effects of medication therapy and substance abuse on overall health and well-being.

I have earned my reputation as the go-to specialist for delivering quality health education through informative, engaging presentations that consistently receive rave reviews for their content and humor. With over 30 years experience, I am well-known for keeping my audiences awake, informed and laughing.

Knowledge of medications and substances and their effects has never been more essential to patient care. With my skill set and perspective, I feel that I am uniquely qualified to be your first choice within this specialty.

“Top of the Heap”: The Most Frequently Prescribed Medications and Their Effects on Overall Health

Faced with a marketplace awash in direct-to-consumer advertising of prescription drugs and an explosion of new drug entities over the last several years, many healthcare professionals may find it challenging to stay up to date with the latest prescribing trends in disease state management. This presentation will provide an overview of those frequently prescribed brand name medications whose actions, side effects, contraindications and potential drug interactions may have the greatest impact on well-being and overall health.

“Take It On The Run Baby!” : Licit and Illicit Substance Abuse and Its Effect on Well-Being

It's a fast-paced world and, unfortunately, many of our patients seek the assistance of illicit substances and licit substances (used illicitly) just to cope and get through their busy, trying days. This program will provide an overview of the most common substances of abuse and their physical and mental manifestations, as well as techniques that may assist in identifying and managing a substance-abusing patient. The potential for contraindications to therapy along with possible resulting medical emergencies and the necessity for dosage modifications of commonly used medications in such patients will be discussed.

"The Chamber of (Self-Medication) Secrets" : Patient Self-Medication and Effects on Overall Health

Armed with limited information and faced with rising prescription drug costs, our patients continue to self-medicate with a variety of prescription drugs, non-prescription drugs, herbal remedies and dietary supplements, often without mention during a review of their medical history. Many patients add or substitute prescription and non-prescription drug products in their medication regimen, unaware of unaware of potentially serious drug interactions, contraindications, and adverse effects. This program will provide an overview of the most popular prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs, herbal products and nutritional supplements patients use to self-medicate, including a discussion of the effects of the illicit use of these products. Special emphasis will be given to techniques useful in obtaining a complete and accurate patient medication history.

“I Have Become…Comfortably Numb!” : Use of Local Anesthesia and Opioid and Non-Opioid Analgesics

Management of pain during minor medical and dental procedures is accomplished with the use of local anesthetics. Due to their potential for producing life-threatening systemic adverse reactions, a thorough knowledge of the pharmacology of these agents is essential for their safe and effective use. Management of post-therapeutic pain is accomplished with the use of opioid and non-opioid analgesics. Since the treatment of such pain usually occurs outside the medical office and relies heavily on individual factors, it is essential to assess the efficacy of analgesics and monitor for their appropriate use. This program will provide an overview of the pharmacology and therapeutics of local anesthetic agents and opioid and non-opioid analgesics, as well as guidelines for safe and effective prescribing practices.

“Un-break My Heart” : Cardiovascular Disease and Patient Care Considerations

Cardiovascular disease is one of the major diseases affecting adults in the U.S. While mortality from heart disease has been declining steadily recently, hospital admissions related to cardiovascular disease are on the rise, due, in part, to our aging population. Hypertension remains one of the major risk factors for heart failure in men and women. It is often asymptomatic and many times may only be discovered at a routine check-up with a medical or dental professional. This program will provide an overview of cardiovascular systemic diseases and the medications used in their treatment. Specific emphasis will be placed on treatment modifications and care planning strategies recommended for these patients.

“Sugar, You're (Not So) Sweet” : Diabetes Mellitus and Patient Care Considerations

It is estimated that 29.1 million Americans, or 9.3% of the population, have diabetes. Of the 29.1 million, 21.0 million are diagnosed, and 8.1 million remain undiagnosed. Diabetes remains the 7th leading cause of death in the United States. This program will provide participants with an overview of diabetes mellitus, the arsenal of medications used in its management and the impact of both the disease and its treatment on overall health. Specific emphasis will be placed on recommended treatment modifications and patient management techniques necessary for patients living with diabetes.
