Overcoming Toxic Invisibility for Asian Americans

AAPIs are more represented than ever in media and society, yet we are still rendered invisible through external forces like racism and xenophobia; through internal forces like guilt, shame, and self-criticism; and our cultures are sometimes erased as well, through assimilation or intimidation. This creates an all-encompassing, ‘toxic’ invisibility that permeates our entire lives, following us wherever we go, making us invisible even to ourselves. Ryan Takemiya combines healing, storytelling, and a radical new way of looking at culture to help AAPIs and their allies be seen and heard in the workplace and beyond.

Participants will be given tangible tools to heal, be seen/heard, and change the culture around them. Including physical, vocal, and somatic exercises developed from therapy practices, public speaking techniques, and psychological research, and can be tailored to fit the specific needs (length, content) of your organization.

The Asian American Renaissance

What does it mean to be Asian American?
...Stop asking the question and start answering it.

With more AAPIs than ever involved in the arts, sports, culture, politics, entrepreneurship and beyond, we are poised to create a distinctive identity, rooted in our unique experiences, that sets us apart from other communities but also brings us together in our shared experience as marginalized peoples. But the big question is, what will that identity look like? What IS AAPI culture?

This workshop will cover the history of AAPI culture and introduce the revolutionary notion of "cultural synthesis". Now, more than ever, we need more than just cultural competency - we need self-determined individuals who are armed with cultural agency to be able to change the culture around them.

Workshop presentation includes tools and exercises developed from cultural research, and can be tailored to fit the specific needs (length, content) of your organization.

Storytelling for Success

How can you influence others, speak your truth, AND boost your self-esteem at the same time? TELL YOUR STORY. Our brains are wired to use stories to navigate the world and to understand ourselves and others. But so often we are discouraged from using our gifts, to the point that many of us have forgotten how. Ryan Takemiya has developed a curriculum that will help you find your voice and learn how to use it. This multifaceted workshop touches on story structure, mythology, and even neuroscience to help you understand how stories engage the mind (and even change our brain chemistry!). Vocal and psycho-somatic exercises will help you strengthen your voice, and you will learn how to engage an audience of any size. Amplifying your voice with the power of storytelling could unlock your potential in all aspects of life. The world deserves to hear your unique voice. So…what's your story?

Workshop presentation includes physical, vocal, somatic, and written exercises.

Altering The Narrative

Every day, AAPIs are triggered by toxic invisibility and sent into cycles of shame/anxiety. This creates a negative personal narrative that lowers our self-esteem, making us less likely to take risks, speak out, and become effective leaders. Changing that narrative requires constant internal work.

This workshop will teach participants how to regulate their nervous systems and rewire their brains to tell a different story about themselves. Using concepts from neuroscience and techniques from therapy/psychology participants will learn how to deactivate their stress response, craft their stress experience into a story, and then share that story with others for emotional validation, all for the purpose of positive identity formation.

Presentation followed by interactive physical, vocal, and somatic exercises developed from therapy practices, public speaking techniques, and psychological research, and can be tailored to fit the specific needs (length, content) of your organization.

  • As part of our AAPI Heritage Month celebrations, Asian@Pega invited Ryan Takemiya to give a workshop on "Overcoming Toxic Invisibility”. It was an incredible and transformative experience. His eloquent and insightful presentation resonated deeply with attendees, validating their experiences and helping them understand the conflicting emotions they had been grappling with. Ryan addressed both external and internal forces of invisibility with grace and empathy, providing practical strategies for overcoming these challenges. He seamlessly incorporated our questions into his talk, demonstrating his deep understanding and genuine care. Ryan created a supportive and enlightening environment that was a resounding success, not just for those in America but for the global Asian community at Pega. We cannot recommend Ryan enough—everyone should invite him to speak! His workshop was a resounding success and I know it will have a lasting, positive impact on our community.

  • In a world where so many of us struggle to feel comfortable in our skin and bring our full selves to work, it's imperative to reflect on our social and cultural contexts to unlearn some of the behaviors and thought patterns we've adopted over the years. Ryan's talk on 'toxic invisibility' was such an incredibly informing and empowering session that unpacked how so many Asian Americans are rendered invisible internally and externally, prohibiting them from truly thriving in some facets of western society. He was incredibly eloquent, open, and thoughtful in his approach, providing us with the tools to better understand ourselves and bring a more authentic version of ourselves in our day-to-day lives.

  • I had the privilege of working with Ryan shortly after seeing him speak at another conference. He is charming, engaging, and extremely easy to work with. Being a gifted storyteller, he guided our participants through his presentation on Overcoming Toxic Invisibility. It was informative, powerful, and more importantly, actionable. He was the perfect keynote closer for our Month of Inclusion events. I would highly recommend Ryan and I look forward to working with him again in the near future.

  • Storytelling for Success Workshop: Ryan led the workshop for my company's ERG, Asians in Action. Our surveys suggested the members resonated with the material and learnt from it. The format of the workshop, even though virtual, encouraged participation and communication via breakout rooms. He made sure to keep groups small so everyone was involved and shared ( we had 200+ attendees). He also made sure the material generated value/worked for this specific audience. This is the second time Ryan led a session with us and hope to have him back soon. Highly recommend Ryan for corporate ERG events and beyond. He is an incredible speaker and has created great workshops.

  • Overcoming Toxic Invisibility for Asian American Presentation: The material and content was clear and engaging. As a participant who is not from the AAPI community, I appreciated his exercises, stories, and content. I wish there was more time! I wanted to hear more! Ryan would be great for any corporate, higher education, non-profit, or community organization looking for an SME with best practiced research. Great Job.

  • Ryan spoke to our Asian ERG community during AAPI Heritage Month to share his mission for empowering AAPIs and their allies with the agency to transform themselves, their workplaces, and society at large to overcome what he calls "Toxic Invisibility". We learned about how to address and overcome Toxic Invisibility in the workplace through mentorship programs, storytelling, open discussions, and more. Ryan emphasized that everyone has a story to tell, whether it’s by using your words or through other forms of art. What made this event so successful and impactful was Ryan's calming presence and, strong storytelling, and empathy. Thank you for joining us and sharing your insights with us.

  • Our Asian Pacific American Employee Resource Group had the pleasure of working with Ryan to host him on a Overcoming Toxic Invisibility Workshop. Ryan was very intentional to understand our community to tailor his content to ensure it resonated with the audience. In a virtual environment it can be hard to engage, but Ryan made it interactive to feel as if we were all together. I highly recommend working with Ryan! He is down to earth and intelligent, a deadly combo that makes him an engaging speaker.
