The Augmented Learner

Immersive technologies are not new to learning and teaching, but the move to ubiquity of AR/AI/VR and other related tools are being touted as the way forward, quickly being deployed to classrooms and other learning environments. This talk will concisely lay out some of those promises and give some rational, fair-minded, and cautionary counterpoints to commercial dogma in this space, giving some hints and tools to help developers and educators as the technology seeps into our learning cultures.

The Confluence of AR and AI in Education: A Journey Through the Automation Dilemma

In the opening presentations of the World Immersive Learning Labs Symposium 2024, held in Tokyo, Japan, from March 25-27, Eric Hawkinson delivered an insightful talk on the confluence of Augmented Reality (AR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the educational sector. As a co-founder of the symposium and an advocate for innovative learning technologies, Eric set the stage for the event by discussing the evolving landscape of immersive technologies and their impact on education. He highlighted the challenges and opportunities presented by the integration of AR and AI, stressing the importance of collaboration among educators, technologists, and researchers to navigate this dynamic field.

The Automation of Human Inquiry

A look at what it means for educational institutions as more of the processes of teaching and learning are automated from student, educator, facilities, and leadership perspectives.

Cultural Exchange with Virtual Travel

Exploring Immersive Storytelling for a Post COVID-19 Tourism Industry
Explore the lesser traveled path through the eyes of someone who grew up in these places. Hearing personal experiences from hometowns all over the world.
Tourism may be changed forever due to a health pandemic. But that won't stop humans from seeking human connection in the world. Using immersive technology like augmented and virtual reality, we can explore the world in a different way. Perhaps it is not the same as traditional travel, but there are some forms of travel that might be better than before. This project seeks to connect humans with virtual travel.

  • I invited Eric to deliver a workshop at the virtual “Future of EduLearning Seminar” for a group of academicians. He spoke on the “Immersive Learning Technology Tools to drive digital learning and boost engagement”. The attendees were so impacted by the workshop, he had inspired and taken the attendees to the world of ARV, VR and Mixed Realities. His engagement with the attendees was great and of course his delivery and humour made it an exciting session! Eric is really passionate about the topic and made an enormous difference to the event in terms of quality and engagement. Some of the attendees have quoted his workshop “The most engaging session”.

  • Eric Hawkinson was a speaker at EdTechXAsia, a conference I managed. I have had the pleasure of working with many of the EdTech industry's brightest minds and he ranks amongst one of the best I’ve encountered so far. His approach to the sessions he led was innovative and he provided valuable insight to the delegates in attendance. His session was one of the most popular ones at the conference and I’d love to work with Eric again.

  • Eric's presentation was phenomenal! I and the conference attendees thoroughly enjoyed his talk, the example he used and his explanation of how advanced technologies can (and do) bring even tourism and cultural exchange much closer to us -as close as our fingertips- was enlightening. Well done, Eric: informative and inspiring!
