Long bio late 2020

Betsy Reed is an accomplished speaker, author and leader on social and environmental issues. She has been focused on social justice, racial equity, LGBTQI+ and the environment for nearly 30 years, having started early as a volunteer for local political campaigns and community organising in her native Wyoming from the age of 10. She holds advanced degrees in politics and has developed an international career over the past 17 years working with clients and collaborators around Europe, the UK, the US, Africa and Asia. She’s created and directed high-profile national campaigns on issues such as fair trade and changing behaviours on food waste. She led sustainability public affairs work for the world’s biggest food company, and worked as an independent consultant advising executives in the food, tech and fashion industries on sustainability strategy, risk, and internal and external engagement.

Betsy’s passion is ensuring that systems, habits and policy approaches ultimately have a positive impact on women and children. She works towards that aim by focusing on policy, supply chains, consumer habits, education and sustainable development approaches. Her holistic perspective is informed by her work as a yoga and mindfulness teacher, which in turn is informed by her career as a sustainability leader. Betsy understands that everyone and everything exists in an interconnected ecosystem, and she is uniquely skilled at challenging, inspiring and supporting leaders and teams to connect to themselves to change the wider world.

Betsy is an award-winning director of innovative behaviour change approaches and is a polished, engaging and warm presence on-stage, on the radio and in lecture theatres. She was invited to write her first book, ‘Communicating Social and Environmental Issues Effectively,’ published in summer 2020 by Emerald Publishing and the UK’s PRCA, the largest PR association in Europe.

She is regularly invited to speak at and chair events, sits on the Glasgow Caledonian Business School International Business Advisory Group, tutors at Cambridge University and Blanquerna in Barcelona and is a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Arts (RSA), which brings together Fellows around the world in a network of people focused on enriching society through ideas and action.

In November 2020 she launched a podcast, 'The Discomfort Practice,' which explores how positive discomfort has shaped how individual leaders, creatives, athletes, activists and others show up in their own lives and affects how they influence the world around them.

Betsy is both American and British and is based in Barcelona.

Her main speaking topics are:

* 'How connection, play and being human in everything you do can save the world'

* 'The future of work in a post-covid world'

* 'How living your values and being human can change the world of work and change the world'

* 'How to be an activist in whatever you do'

Short bio late 2020

Betsy Reed is a sustainability leader, author and speaker who has spent the entirety of her career focused on social and environmental issues. This has led her to work internationally in communications, public affairs, campaigning and behaviour change with governments, NGOs, academic institutions and businesses. For the past 7 years, she has run her own consultancy, working as an independent advisor to clients in the UK, US and Europe. She helps boards, leaders and teams in the food, fashion and tech sectors to define and deliver effective strategies and approaches that grapple effectively with the complexities of social and environmental issues and how to embed them in order to make their organisation more resilient and sustainable.

Past roles include leading Nestle UK’s sustainability public affairs programme, serving as Head of Campaigns for Zero Waste Scotland and working as Director of leading international communications agency Grayling's sustainability unit. These days, Betsy focuses almost exclusively on working with the private sector, helping her clients find ways to operate more sustainably and create positive change while also ensuring commercial success.

Modern Leadership Skills: Why ESG Is Central

Being able to understand and work with the complexity of social and environmental issues are now a core part of a professional skillset - particularly for leaders and rising leaders. If you didn’t already know that, you’re a bit behind the curve.

Issues as diverse as equality, climate change, diversity in work cultures and other complex issues now make or break an organisation’s reputation, its understanding of risk, its ability to recruit and retain employees and, ultimately, its success and impact in the world.

Want to ensure your leadership skills and your organisation's decision-making are relevant now and in the future? Let Betsy inform and upskill you with her insights on top trends, business drivers, risks and tools you already need but might not have.

Storytelling for Influence & Impact

As a leader or manager, how well do you bring people with you, navigate tricky decisions, create psychological safety around you in which people can thrive, innovate and contribute to the success of your objectives?

Do you understand how to influence, and are you doing it as well as you might, by leveraging the 'Seven Types of Power'? And are you creating the kind of workplace culture and world you really want to work and live in?

It might seem simple, but one of the answers - and skills - that can help you with all of those things is storytelling. This session will lead you through key storytelling principles and give you an opportunity to practically apply them in your own context. You'll emerge a better communicator, equipped with a set of tools to help you continue mastering your storytelling skills as a leader.

Positive Habit-Setting Made Simple

Habit-setting is simple when based on the way our brains work. We are wired to do things efficiently - which means habitually. But setting habits is not necessarily EASY.

In this presentation, Betsy walks audiences through a straightforward, science-based four-step process to set and keep habits that can serve as the architecture of a purpose-driven, fulfilling leadership style.

Mindfulness Makes You Smarter: Techniques for Leaders & Their Teams

Did you know that stress makes you dumber, by switching off the strategic part of your brain? Did you know that practicing gratitude is proven to make you healthier?

Oh, so many reasons to practice mindfulness at work...

This interactive, engaging presentation, developed and delivered by a qualified mindfulness coach and leadership mentor, lays out the science of mindfulness and why it is useful to unlock creativity, reduce stress and improve overall wellbeing and effectiveness in every area of our lives.

You'll come away with simple exercises you can practice before hard conversations, to start your day, to end your day, or before making decisions. They've been designed for a range of situations you'll encounter regularly in your day and Betsy promises you will love them (along with her soothing meditation voice, when practicing some of the techniques).
