Chief Warrant Officer Five (Retired) Cheryl D. Monroe retired on December 31, 2020, after 28 years of distinguished service as the Senior Logistics Warrant Officer in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, G4, at the Pentagon. In this prestigious position, she also served as the Program Manager for the Department of Defense National Level Ammunition Capability (NLAC), and represented the U.S. Military in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Ammunition Interoperability Working Group.
A native of Atlanta, Georgia, CW5(R) Monroe enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1991 as an Ammunition Specialist (55B). She made history as the first African American female in the ammunition field to be promoted to CW5 on December 3, 2017. Her exemplary career and contributions to the military were honored with her induction into the U.S. Army Women’s Foundation Hall of Fame on March 11, 2020.
Throughout her career, CW5(R) Monroe served in various critical assignments including Germany, Fort Bragg, Johnston Atoll, Hunter Army Airfield, Fort Stewart, and Redstone Arsenal. Her roles encompassed duties as the Supply Officer, Platoon Leader, Accountable Officer, Storage Officer, Material Management Officer, Brigade Ammunition Officer, and TSC/ESC Ammunition Officer. She bravely deployed six times into combat zones, demonstrating unwavering dedication and leadership.
CW5(R) Monroe's extensive military education includes the Warrant Officer Basic Course (Distinguished Military Graduate), Warrant Officer Advanced Course, Warrant Officer Staff Course, and the Warrant Officer Senior Staff Course. Her professional qualifications are further highlighted by her certifications as a Department of Defense Sexual Assault Advocate, Project Management Professional, Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, Knowledge Management Process Integrator, and her completion of the Advanced Program in Logistics and Technology. She is also designated as a Demonstrated Master Logistician and served as a Contracting Officer Representative.
Her exemplary service is recognized through numerous awards and decorations, including the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal (2 Oak Leaf Clusters), Meritorious Service Medal (4 Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Commendation Medal (3 Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Achievement Medal (3 Oak Leaf Clusters), Afghanistan Campaign Medal (Bronze Star), Iraq Campaign Medal (4 Bronze Stars), War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Staff Badge, and the Drill Sergeant Badge. CW5(R) Monroe is also an esteemed recipient of the Ordnance Order of Samuel Sharpe and the General Brehon B. Somervell Medal of Excellence.
