ARTEMIS is not just a mission; it's a testament to human ingenuity and our unrelenting pursuit of knowledge.

Women of NASA: Pioneers in Mars Exploration and Beyond

Who are among the most prominent NASA ladies in our endeavors to explore Mars? Should future Mars crewed missions have all-female crews? These questions will be answered along with a description of the Mars Exploration Program, the Mars Sample Return Program, and the ARTEMIS program which has as one of its goals to send the first astronauts to Mars.

Dare Mighty Things – A Short History of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory

The origins of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory date back to the 1930s, when Caltech professor Theodore von Kármán oversaw pioneering work in rocket propulsion. After unsuccessful and sometimes hazardous experiments, several of his graduate students were forced to move their work off campus. They chose the Arroyo Seco, a dry canyon wash north of the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California – and future home of JPL. This early work grew into a laboratory of over 4000 employees that has sent spacecraft to every planet in our solar system and two spacecraft now in interstellar space.

Are We Alone? For Kids

Imagine looking up at the stars and wondering: “Is someone out there wondering about us too?” Scientists ask that question every day! But first, they have to figure out what life really is — anything that grows, eats, and changes. To search for life, we use giant telescopes on Earth and even floating in space! We send brave robots on missions, like the Mars Sample Return to bring back pieces of Mars, and the Europa Clipper to explore a moon covered in ice! Scientists also use the Drake Equation, a kind of space treasure map, to guess how many alien civilizations might be out there. But there’s a puzzle called the Fermi Paradox — if life should be everywhere, why haven’t we seen it yet? Our plan? Build better telescopes, explore more worlds, and never give up! Maybe you will be the space explorer who finds the answer!

Is there Money on the Moon? The Emerging Lunar Economy

This presentation will focus on the emerging lunar economy, which is still in its infancy, but gaining serious momentum. The Moon is transitioning from a national/scientific frontier to a commercial destination, driven by governments and private companies investing in space exploration, resource utilization, and infrastructure development. The presentation will begin with an overview of facts about the moon, followed with a discussion about why one would want to go to the moon. It will highlight NASA’s ARTEMIS program that intends to send astronauts back to the moon, followed by a summary of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative with its plans to send numerous small missions to the moon to prepare for the return of astronauts. Finally, the presentation will address some ideas for companies to make money on the ARTEMIS and CLPS Programs.

  • Fabulous! Captain Lehman and his lovely wife visited our school in March 2024. He spoke to my aerospace class about the Artemis Program and to our general auditoreum (grades 5-12) about Mars exploration. Both talks were adapted and personalized to the size and age level of these student groups and to our particular school. Captain Lehman balances his slideshow lectures with humor and high-tech videos. This keeps things interesting for all age levels. At our school, the Q&A went so long we eventually had to cut it off! Having an engineer from JPL is a rare opportunity and we hope to have him back again. Aloha!

  • I wanted to say that David's presentation on JPL and the projects they have done over the decades was wonderful. He gave my students at John Muir High School a wonderful presentation with many interesting pictures. He answered all the students' questions, and I would like to see him again. While he shared a lot of history and information, I can be sure we only scratched the surface of what this incredibly accomplished man knows. His career background is truly amazing, from working on a nuclear submarine to 40 years at JPL. He is a very impressive individual. I would very much like to hear him speak again about the work he did.

  • David visited our preschool dressed as an astronaut, and the children were absolutely captivated! One child who usually does not sit for circle time stayed engaged for TWO full circles because he was enjoying it so much. David knew exactly how to connect with young learners and explain big concepts in ways that were fun, clear, and memorable. He demonstrated gravity on the moon through the “Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes” song and showed how rockets lift off using a balloon experiment. The children were thrilled, engaged, and fully immersed from start to finish. We highly recommend David for any early childhood program—his ability to inspire curiosity and learning is truly exceptional.
