Bio

I am a Senior Research Investigator in the Wharton Neuroscience Initiative and Positive Psychology Center at the University of Pennsylvania.

Since 2014, I have also been working part-time as a scientific consultant and facilitator/group coach. From 2014 to 2019, I worked as a researcher and lecturer at the Berlin School of Mind and Brain, Charité Universitaetsmedizin Berlin, Touro College Berlin and the Center for Mindfulness at Brown University.

Originally from Germany, I have a PhD in psychology from Humboldt-Universitaet zu Berlin (2013), a BSc degree in Biological Psychology from the University of Amsterdam (2007) and a MSc degree in Human Cognitive Neuropsychology from the University of Edinburgh (2008). I also dedicated substantial time to learn about various contemplative traditions and practices. For example, I am a trainer of the affect regulation training (ART) and a certified Hatha Yoga Teacher (Rishikesh, India, 2017).

Contemplative Dyad Meditation

Good relationships are crucial in all areas of life. Yet, in our busy schedules, we often do not take the time to foster deep connections and to be fully present with each other.

In this session, Dr. Vera Ludwig from the Wharton Neuroscience Initiative (WiN), will demonstrate a meditation exercise that can (1) foster deep connection between two people and (2) train better awareness and acceptance of inner experiences: contemplative dyad meditation (CDM).

While traditional sitting meditations are now well-known in the West, few people practice or know of meditation methods that are carried out together with others, such as CDM. Dr. Ludwig investigated the technique at the University of Pennsylvania.

After a brief introduction to the science of the technique, participants will have the opportunity to practice CDM live during the session. Participants will also receive instructions on how to use the exercise with clients, friends, partners, and family as a valuable resource.

Being Fully Present by Meditating with Beauty, Art, Pleasure and Music

We are often being told that we should learn to "be in the moment". But this is easier said than done. How can we actually achieve this?

One highly efficient way is by using sensory experiences, such as visual beauty, art, sensory pleasure, and active listening to music.

This neuroscience-backed talk and workshop will give an introduction to how we can harness such positive experiences in order to fully enter the present moment and develop our ability to be mindful.
