AI for Good: AI x space: Can we monitor a microscopic organism from space?

Can we monitor with high accuracy a microscopic organism floating in water bodies not visible to the naked eye – all the way from space? The answer is yes – with the power of AI! Phytoplankton is a microscopic aquatic organism that produces over 50% of the Earth’s oxygen and maintains aquatic food webs – directly impacting 4 of the 17 UN SDGs. In February 2024, a NASA satellite (PACE satellite) was launched into orbit specifically to help monitor phytoplankton – among other goals. Harvard data science students collaborated with NASA to understand the potential implications of this new satellite data, such as: What color wavelength is the best predictor of phytoplankton? No, it is NOT green.

Join us in this presentation to learn about the newest AI x Space technology, see phytoplankton samples from nearby Lake Geneva, and even TASTE phytoplankton!
