Theresa Wilbanks is an author, speaker, podcast host, founder of Sustainable Caregiving, and a Certified Caregiving Consultant. Theresa cared for her father until his passing at 99 years of age. During that time, she experienced the raging river of emotions that comes with caring for a family member. Overwhelmed and drowning, she navigated toward a more sustainable caregiving experience. In presentations, workshops, and one-on-one Sustainable Caregiving Coaching sessions, Theresa empowers family caregivers to confidently navigate their caregiving journey. Theresa shares her story and strategies in her book, Navigating the Caregiver River: A Journey to Sustainable Caregiving, available on Amazon, and explores the 12 Sustainable Caregiving Strategies in the limited series Self-Caregiving Strategies Podcast. Empowered Caregiver Support System

When we experience a significant life change, our support network often changes, so it isn’t surprising that we need to rethink and recreate our support system when we step, or fall headfirst, into a caregiving role. When we think of a support system, we often think of people. While people can be an essential part of our caregiver support system, we need a more varied and versatile system that doesn’t solely rely on the physical and emotional availability of others.

We explore the support system components, including the foundation, cornerstone, 12 Sustainable Caregiving Strategies, and how routines connect the components. We’ll troubleshoot the culprits that can destabilize our system and discuss how to begin construction on a stable caregiver support system that will empower us on our caregiving journey and beyond.

Theresa came to speak to our caregiver support group in November and we have gotten so much positive feedback from the attendees. The 12 sustainable caregiving strategies were very helpful and the way Theresa describes the whole caregiver spectrum is a great way to look at the experience and it made it easy for everyone to relate to and describe where they are on their caregiving journey.
