Bio

I began my music teaching career at Fortune Consolidated School in rural Prince Edward Island and now teach K-6 music at Montague Consolidated School in Prince Edward Island. There I lead a grades 4-6 choir, 2 rock bands, a guitar club, and act as musical director for various productions at the school. My passion for integrating rock bands into the school setting led to the founding of the annual "Rock-a-palooza: PEI Schools of Rock Showcase" event in Prince Edward Island. As well, I have published articles in the Canadian Music Educator Journal on the topics of creativity as well as teaching rock bands in schools. My first book, "Rock Coach: A Practical Guide for Teaching Rock Bands in School," is now available on Amazon in Canada and the United States in both print and Kindle format. My blog and website, www.stevesmusicroom.com, is catered to the professional development of music educators in Canada and around the world. As well, I write a regular column on popular music education in the Canadian Music Educator Journal published quarterly by the Canadian Music Educators' Association.

My workshops are designed to be as hands on as possible, getting teaching up and playing as much as possible and experiencing new ways to engage their students in the joy of music making. Teachers will learn to put the theory aside and just create original music with their students or rock out in a rock band with their young learners. As these are designed to get attendees up and playing, my workshops work best with between 30 and 40 people. However, larger audiences can be accommodated. Contact me for more information!

Rock Bands in the Elementary School Setting (Part 1)

Come on up and play! This practical workshop brings you into my classroom and provides inspiration and practical tips for starting or advancing your own rock band at your school. No previous rock music experience required. You will leave with a list of resources and even a song tabbed out to get you started.

Rock Bands in the Elementary School Setting (Part 2)

Now that you can coach your students through playing rock songs, it is time to write music with your young rockers. Delve into the song writing process with Steve and write your own songs within a rock group.

The By-Ear-Learning Process

This workshop helps you to understand the benefits of learning music by ear. Learning music by ear seems to be a forgotten skill for many trained musicians. In a practical way, this workshop will help give you some strategies to help students understand the By-Ear-Learning process and be successful with it. If you are not comfortable learning music by ear, this is the perfect workshop for you.

Creativity in the Music Classroom

Creativity and music were once one in the same. This workshop delves into the history of creativity in music and gives you strategies for implementing creative activities into your music classroom from improvisation to sound painting and beyond. Bring an instrument and create music with your colleagues.

Song Writing for Performance

From chord progressions to lyrics, this workshop is designed to get you song writing so that you can coach your students through song writing too. I will take you into a project that I did with my students where they worked together to write a song as a class and perform them in concert. Just remember: if it sounds good, it’s probably good.
